Sphagnum looked down casually at the two heads, as if amused, and remained entirely unaffected by the toxins the snake was obviously trying to inject. Unfortunately for the serpent, it didn't seem to have the sentience to get that living stone wasn't the most ideal candidate for poisoning.
It was tempting to leave the scaly behemoth hanging there, digging uselessly, but if Sphagnum let it keep that up, energy would have to be needlessly expended in regenerating a potentially decimated body back to an acceptably intact state.
With a lazy dexterity, Sphagnum's hands plucked the heads free in turn and settled a grip beneath each jaw, not even yet bothering to exert full strength. Then, at the speed of a snail's gallop, it began to inexorably pull them apart from each other.

Aha, finally, a fresh larynx to emulate.
"You might want to back up," Sphagnum called to Cassie with her exact voice, not breaking the nice death glare it and the snake had going on. "Oh, wait, so sorry, you can't." Was that sarcasm? Probably. She should be able to tell- it was her voice, after all.
"How was it that you managed to attract the attentions of this darling brute?"
Unable to comprehend how it’s jaws were being forcefully pried off by this being, the snake willingly backed off, giving a nasty, cruel glare. Expelling a hiss from its throats, the double headed snake initiated its retreat, designating the former prey no longer of interest. The snake took its leave from the chasm and disappeared from sight.

"I'm Nina," she responded, offering a small, nervous smile in greeting. "I didn't get a toolkit, just the blowgun, some darts, water, and this weird smelly ointment stuff." A streak of eyeliner she hadn't bothered to take off the night before left a dark smear across her temple, made worse when she reached up and anxiously ran a hand over her face.

Turning, she watched the people walking by with wide eyes, taking in their blank expressions and empty gazes. "I don't really know why, but-" she hesitated, feeling kinda silly, "Well, I get the feeling I could start screaming like a crazy person in the middle of the street and they wouldn't even hear me," she admitted sheepishly, glancing back at him for a moment before her eyes flitted away. "They're like zombies or something." Embarrassed, she looked back to where the fragments of the door were.

Or at least, where they used to be.

She did a double-take, doubting herself, but the shattered pieces were gone, like smoke in the wind. "I- I'm so freaking confused right now. Why are we here? What even is this place? Things are disappearing! The door's gone! It- it was right here!" She covered her face with her hands, shaking her head. "I feel like I've gone crazy," she groaned, staring at the ground between the cracks in her fingers. "I'm sorry, I know you don't know any more than I do." Slowly letting out a calming sigh, she let her hands drop, then gestured at the people around them. "Do you think they'll even react if we try to talk to them?"
(They also get a food bar. :p)

"Weird," Damir noted. It seemed like everything was the same, except for their extra equipment. But that didn't answer why they were there. Or why they had hallucinated the things they did in those buildings.

He nodded along, "I got that feeling too. I haven't tried talking to anyone yet, but I get a feeling it won't be very productive."

"Hey," Damir said softly, trying to help her calm down a little. "We'll figure it out, and we'll be back home before you know it." His furrowed smile offering little comfort.

"I don't know if they'll reply," he answered her most recent question, glancing at the disappearing crowd. "But, we should try, in any case. It might just be the way people are in this country. They could tell us... where.. "

There was a short moment of silence from Damir.

"Your hand," he mentioned, his face scrunched up as he pointed at the numbers on her palm, "there's numbers-" He glanced down at his own hand, "I have them too."

He rubbed at his hand, wondering just what purpose they served, and why his said 100.

Cassie’s jaw dropped before she quickly pulled her shock together, was a tree talking sarcastically to her? Wait no, I thought we already figured this out, it’s a tree creature not a tree. Whoa this had to be one of the most wild days she had ever had. “It-it just followed me” she stammered still shocked, “is that my voice?”

When the snake pried itself free and took its coward's leave, Sphagnum was initially disappointment over the lack of resistance, but then brightened at the concept of encountering it again.
"Marvelous!" It applauded, the meeting of its palms sounding out dull, solid thuds. "Death is so overrated anyhow, don't you think?"

"And, yes, child, excellent observation, this is indeed your voice." Sphagnum did a neat spin to face Cassie and executed an exaggerated bow, branches dragging on the ground at the deepest part of the dip. "Hope you like it, because it's not going anywhere anytime soon."

“So what are you? A tree creature? Because that’s what I have been calling you in my head” Cassie demanded ignoring its comment on having her voice.

"I am nothing but myself," Sphagnum supplied very helpfully. "Although I do happen to belong to an elite race called spriggans." Its spindly fingers underwent a series of dismissive flicking motions, as if warding off a persistent swarm of fruit flies. "Lot of recluses they are, though. I do not claim the energy."
"And what could you be?" Getting down on one knee, Sphagnum cocked its head to the side, looking the picture of ignorance. "Certainly not a.. a human creature?"

“Hilarious” she rolled her eyes “a spriggan?! Hah!” She let out a guffaw and clapped her hands, “hilarious. And yeah I am a human creature.”

Hewitt hit harder. “Have you any sense, kid? If you don’t get after that Beach Bug, it’ll get after you. Unless you need me to show you how to do things again.”
You come from a long line of magical people.
Your mother can wipe out a room full of people with a whisper.
Your dad can kill a man with a look.
This is nothing, right?
J...just a bug...

"I...I don't—"
Saturn didn't really have a choice at that point. The bug had already risen from the sand, in all it's bright red, six legged, beady eyed glory.
It didn't hesitate, tumbling over the sand towards her.
It was either kill or be killed.
Aim... for the head? Head, he said? I think?

Was the head the right place to stab?
She wasn't sure.

In a flurry of panic, she stabbed. The spear sank into the bugs head with a sickening crack, and for a moment, everything paused. Until she yanked the spear out, and the bug lunged for her again.
It swung at her, the pinchers on its front leg snagging her calf.
She stumbled, a sob escaping her throat. Shaking fingers clutched the spear, stabbing unsteadily as it back for her again.
OhmygodamIgoingtodie? Ithurtssomuch.
She stabbed, and stabbed, and stabbed, and finally with a violent snap! the spear drove home right in the bugs eye.

And it vanished in a puff of smoke, leaving Saturn coughing and trembling in the sand.

“Hilarious” she rolled her eyes “a spriggan?! Hah!” She let out a guffaw and clapped her hands, “hilarious. And yeah I am a human creature.”
"Wow, what an astounding encounter this is turning out to be." Sphagnum was tempted to return to full height, but being able to maintain eye contact without getting a crick in the heck was a luxury. "Never in my wildest dreams..."
It brought up a hand to cradle its jawline and tapped its cheek wonderingly. "Could this human creature have a name?"

“Could this spriggan creature have a name?” Cassie retorted, no way was she giving her name to a back talking, sarcastic tree creature who was sassing her.

(her mother is EVE?)
Hewitt watched with satisfaction as Saturn risked her life, bravely killing the red beast.
When the bug had safely poofed up into smoke, he strode over, driving his cane near the center of the circle of depressed sand.
He stood near the cane and wheeled, staring at the girl crouched on the ground, hair hanging in her face.
“Good job, kid,” Hewitt said. “I won’t compliment you more than once. If you sink the spear a little harder next time, you might do better. Fighting builds character. Now I believed you earned this,” he indicated the coin with the tip of his cane.
“Do you have any Miracle Salve? I can imagine that your injury hurts. Too many a weakling is reduced to tears with a grab like that. Pain,” he sniffed haughtily, screwing up his face.
