hi im after a bit advice, what it is my father in law has an alotment and keeps a lot of birds differnt types that lay eggs and some are quite expensive his alotment keeps getting broke into and the birds are getting stolen and same for other plot holders,.the police on one occasion found the chickens along with a few other peoples chickens in a back garden off the theifs home about 150 they reconed probebly stolen for order or to sell at auction but the police said because you can not prove witch off these birds where his he carnt have then back so was wondering is there any way to tag a small bird with out any one stealing them knowing there taged or some sort off smart water
 
There are varieties of ways of marking birds- different types of leg bands and wing bands. Most of them are visible if one knows where to look. The only hidden device would be a microchip, but that is likely cost prohibitive. Toe punching, and tattooing are visible but permanent ways to mark stock. If someone is not an experienced poultry keeper he/she may not know about toe punching. That is visible but only if you know to look for it.
