Tatanka Breeders Club: Meat Quail project with history, discussion, pictures and videos

Sorry for the delay in responding Mr Bill, if you go back and read the conversation from the start it is about the larger eggs not fitting the quail trays. My oppinion is that the larger eggs produce a chick that hatches late and is slower than the others. When I inspected the hatched eggs I noticed fecal matter inside, this tells me the chick had been sitting in its own waste. Also, as stated earlier, I feed day old chicks to my falcons as treats. They like the yoke sack, in these slower chicks the yoke sack is absent. This tells me that the sack has already been absorbed and the chick has basically been starving or at best malnutritioned.

I was PM that the Tatanka was nothing more than a jumbo Conturnix, I was unaware that you trade marked the name and private branded the strain much like the Texas A&M. Your strain must not be doing as well as the A&M because I have not heard of it before now being as special strain with set standards all coming from one source.
Da Falconer I had that Happen to me once where the Quail where in poop . The Problem i had was my thermostat was showing me the temp of 99.8 and the real temp rechecked was 98.3
Bad thermostate so i now have 4 in with my eggs with just a little one for moisture . I have also had the Moisture too low and the Chicks refuse to pip and or Pip but shrink wrapping, Sad but very true and all human error . I got my eggs from JMF the last 2 times with NO issues and Lots of Help . Fat Daddy is also Very knowledgeable and DT as well. if you listen to them you cant go wrong.
Birds have been ;laying eggs for thousands of yrs humans have been trying to hatch them for less of that time and we make lots of mistakes .I'm not blaming you but if the temp is not right with Mother Nature saying the chicks should hatch in 17 days temps low or too high can speed up or prolong your hatch while the internal parts of the chick does what mother nature intended .

OH I wanna Make this Clear the eggs I had Issues with where my own NO ONE ELSE from some Quail i got 3 yrs ago that where already a yr old .
every thing i have gotted From JMF where awesome and Great Hatch rates even when he shipped them in the winter and we had a storm .

I just read through this entire thing. Interesting to watch it go from scientific and fresh and then degenerating into these last few pages of nonsense (not by fault of the OP or the Tatanka breeders)

People get excited to join a quality project and then they don't do their commitments justice. Just a thought. Additionally, I have been breeding chickens for years and quail for a few months and still don't know what a "yoke" or "yoke sac" is.

JJ have you never eaten an egg? The yolk is they yellow/orange part of the egg. The embryo uses it for food and it's absorbed by the chick just before it hatches if everything goes correctly. It's spelled yolk not yoke (a yoke is something used to tether a beast of burden to work).

I was poking fun at the "yoke sac" (sic) from a previous post

That's why I said I don't know what a yoke (yolk) sac is.

Fatdaddy is right...

And I appreciated his work. I care for both my parents in their 80s, its a very high protein source, and the overall nutritional value of the eggs and meat is pretty valuable for my parents. I have followed this thread from the beginning to try to keep the birds large, healthy and sustained to provide my family a good source of food. Its a ;ot easier for me handling a 1 pound bird too.
WTG you all, I admire your work.

Great thread, but where do we go from here? I want a coturnix that matures fast, weighs 16 oz and spits out nice fat eggs, and tastes just as good as a bobwhite. Wasn't that the point of this whole thing?

Jumbos will get to 16 oz easily with a good high protein feed. I have been able to raise several to size when I can get the 30% protein startina game bird feed. What do you want to know?
