taxing your mileage?

I would be ok with having my millage checked every year when I go in to get my vehicle inspection done. Then pay a pre specified amount on that millage I put on the car in that year.

but then again. I already paid a hefty sales tax when we purchased the vehicle. And here in MA we also pay a once a year "excise" tax on said vehicle. Our last one, due in March was for about $145.
And I am pretty sure that the "excise tax" was explained to me as being "for road and highway upkeep"

I get that the country is in bad shape. I really do. But taxing the day lights out of the people that are lucky enough to still have homes, jobs and vehicles to get from one place to another isnt going to help. it is just going to make it tougher. and make those of us that can and are willing to hunker down even more. Hunker down even MORE. which will mean less revenue over the long haul.

Now, granted. we havent been living beyond our means here.
We bought our 3 bedroom quarter acre lot, home back in 2000 for under 90k
so, even with the market like it is. We are not upside down on our mortgage. which kinda stinks since all the programs currently out there are for helping those that ARE. and to tell ya the truth a extra hundred a month would be SWEET. Only the car finance people have been willing to work with us on "reworking" our auto loan. because technically we are wickedly upside down on that. 75k on a 06 = not good.

we havent really changed our spending habits much at all. we had a BJs membership. we had the one car. the chickens were added as pets. The eggs are a nice bonus.

In fact we have been spending MORE since I have been working. Christmas 08 was actually FUN!

Over all. I just wish the country wasnt in the mess it is in. there are SO MANY to blame. I am just glad I am not the current president. Cleaning up this mess is going to be a PITA. It is going to age him HUGELY

iI think the reasoning behind this is more an excuse to get GPS on all cars than revenue. Obama said he would not support it. i don't believe that. He said he would vote against the Bush FISA bill and took time off his campaign to vote for it. He has a history of supporting invasion of our privacy after lying that he wouldn't.

huh?

Sorry, but just because someone has a high milage car doesnt mean that they are going to drive any more or less than the person that drives a SUV.
In fact. if they put the tax on gas. the person with the SUV is going to be paying more in the long run than the person with the Prius.

We had an Accent before we got the Santa Fe. We drive the SAME amount.
I had a Silverado before I got my Elantra. I drove it the SAME amount. The only car I put less miles on was my 69 Camaro and that was because it was my summer car.

Obama isnt the one that made it ok to take people to Cuba based on the fact they thought you "might look suspicious"
Remember, before Bush Gitmo was a military base. Not a prison camp.

Obama wasnt the one that set up secret courts to give the governemt a rubber stamp to spy on its own citizens. Once again, just because they suspect you. Phone taps anyone???

Now people are concerned about Big Brother? Seriously????
Where have you all been the last 8 years?

and since this topic is going "this" way now. I am walking away.

Just as a clarification.........I didn't just start to feel this way. I have felt our privacy has been invaded for a very long time. I will walk away too. I think I know where this post is going.

I was being very nonpartisan in this I put the due blame on both. With all due respect you are bringing partisanship in this and putting the thread "this way."

Many of you already have these GPS units in your cars. Gm's onstar is a good example. Big Brother can already track those cars. Big Brother can track you through your cell phone as well.

Another thread going awry because some just can't resist a spin. I would love to debate this, BUT THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL FORUM. Maybe those hit and run posters who keep bringing in politics should contact the Administrator and ask for a political thread.

But until then could you please refrain because I get a little fried at some comments that I CAN'T respond to with my opinion because I don't want to break the rules and this is NOT the place for it.

Thank You Very Much...

I'm with you WalkingWolf. It's kind of like getting hit by a girl on the playground. I come here to stop nose bleeds, not to get one :-)
