I would be ok with having my millage checked every year when I go in to get my vehicle inspection done. Then pay a pre specified amount on that millage I put on the car in that year.
but then again. I already paid a hefty sales tax when we purchased the vehicle. And here in MA we also pay a once a year "excise" tax on said vehicle. Our last one, due in March was for about $145.
And I am pretty sure that the "excise tax" was explained to me as being "for road and highway upkeep"
I get that the country is in bad shape. I really do. But taxing the day lights out of the people that are lucky enough to still have homes, jobs and vehicles to get from one place to another isnt going to help. it is just going to make it tougher. and make those of us that can and are willing to hunker down even more. Hunker down even MORE. which will mean less revenue over the long haul.
Now, granted. we havent been living beyond our means here.
We bought our 3 bedroom quarter acre lot, home back in 2000 for under 90k
so, even with the market like it is. We are not upside down on our mortgage. which kinda stinks since all the programs currently out there are for helping those that ARE. and to tell ya the truth a extra hundred a month would be SWEET. Only the car finance people have been willing to work with us on "reworking" our auto loan. because technically we are wickedly upside down on that. 75k on a 06 = not good.
we havent really changed our spending habits much at all. we had a BJs membership. we had the one car. the chickens were added as pets. The eggs are a nice bonus.
In fact we have been spending MORE since I have been working. Christmas 08 was actually FUN!
Over all. I just wish the country wasnt in the mess it is in. there are SO MANY to blame. I am just glad I am not the current president. Cleaning up this mess is going to be a PITA. It is going to age him HUGELY
