I, too, wanted all hens but ended up with a roo. THey were hatched early last March. He was starting to test his crows around 10 weeks. We live on a country road, but technically, we are not allowed poultry because we only have an acre and you need 3 for 'livestock'. There are farms within earshot and I have heard other roosters in the distance at times. He is like a watchdog. When the garage door opens/closes, he crows. When the neighbor starts his truck up at 5 am to leave for work, he crows. If he hears me sneeze through the wall (the coop is right outside my bedroom window) he crows. It doesn't matter if it's dark or not, but I do have the heat lamp on now and we keep solar lights inside for the winter, so it's not dark in there. No one has complained and in fact, the ones right next door are thiking of getting their own chickens this spring. I just keep giving them eggs and they don't seem to care! I also feel it this way....we are the only people around here without a dog.....it's no worse than a barking dog. Plus, I think it adds some nice ambiance! He's a good watchdog. I think you need to be concerned about his temperment. I've about had it with mine because he keeps attacking me. I kick him and he comes back. He's a nasty old thing and I told my husband today he needs to figure out how to off him because I'm sick of being terrorized by him. It's a shame, because I really like having him around, but I cannot enter the coop when he's in there unless I send the kids in first to keep him away from me. He doesn't attack anyone else but me! Good luck, but know he's for sure going to crow...no matter what. It's in his instricts.
