Teaching a Rooster.

I, too, wanted all hens but ended up with a roo. THey were hatched early last March. He was starting to test his crows around 10 weeks. We live on a country road, but technically, we are not allowed poultry because we only have an acre and you need 3 for 'livestock'. There are farms within earshot and I have heard other roosters in the distance at times. He is like a watchdog. When the garage door opens/closes, he crows. When the neighbor starts his truck up at 5 am to leave for work, he crows. If he hears me sneeze through the wall (the coop is right outside my bedroom window) he crows. It doesn't matter if it's dark or not, but I do have the heat lamp on now and we keep solar lights inside for the winter, so it's not dark in there. No one has complained and in fact, the ones right next door are thiking of getting their own chickens this spring. I just keep giving them eggs and they don't seem to care! I also feel it this way....we are the only people around here without a dog.....it's no worse than a barking dog. Plus, I think it adds some nice ambiance! He's a good watchdog. I think you need to be concerned about his temperment. I've about had it with mine because he keeps attacking me. I kick him and he comes back. He's a nasty old thing and I told my husband today he needs to figure out how to off him because I'm sick of being terrorized by him. It's a shame, because I really like having him around, but I cannot enter the coop when he's in there unless I send the kids in first to keep him away from me. He doesn't attack anyone else but me! Good luck, but know he's for sure going to crow...no matter what. It's in his instricts.

My rooster starts to crow at 4:30 every single morning. I live on 5 acres and have neighbors across the street who used to be farmers and LOVE to hear him crow, it brings back good memories for them I think(they're all really old) But there is a neighborhood on the other side of my woods and I've heard one person yell at my roo to shut up. lmao. It was an overcast day and my roo would not stop crowing and the guy and myself had had enough of the crowing so he shouted for him to shut up! It was hilarious. But other than that we haven't had a problem with him.

I've noticed that when he is locked in the coop the crowing is pretty muffled and not easily heard. So I think you should keep them shut up in the house and that should muffle his crows enough for your neighbors. But its a rooster, they protect the flock and they let you know when the sun is coming up and going down. Thats their job. Unless your rooster is like my rooster and thinks that he is dominate over everyone and I can't get through a phone call outside without him crowing to prove his manliness. Or when its overcast he crows all day long and sometimes thats irritating.

Yea, some roosters just crow more than others. nothing you can do. Had a Black Copper Maran gave him to a friend. Thing crowed all day long. Would never shut up. I love listening to them but not all day long. LOL

Oh wow hope my rooster doesn't crow like that. My last roo got up at 4:30 but then stopped at 6:30 when i let him out ( he had breaks between the 2 hrs ) and then he only crowed twice right on Midday.
My coop is really dark and there is a massive hedge running between it and my neighbors so that should help the sound to be more muffled.

How'd that work out for the yeller? Bet that roo was chastised, shut right up and sent a gift basket as an apology!

I don't even hear my roosters anymore. I guess I mean I don't notice them. I wake up and hear them crowing and go right back to sleep. The young guys are trying to crow during the day, but their days are numbered anyway. I guess that might be a nice thing about having a more mature roo, he doesn't feel the need to crow all day long.

I live in the boonies and there is no artificial light source but my rooster starts yelling at 4 in the morning while it's pitch black outside. He is quite audible even inside the coop and I think he's found a way to stick his beak right near one of the vents so he projects well! Fortunately my neighbors like hearing roosters doing their thing.
