Teflon Poisoning

Get yourself some Lodge cast iron pans, the price is reasonable, they are the gold standard of basic cast iron and are made right here in the USA (i said that but don’t know where you are from) they are a lifetime investment, literally impossible to destroy. I also have a lot of LeCruset enameled cast iron for dutch ovens and various saucepans. Those don’t run cheap, but i feel are worth the investment.
my MIL is a 2 time cancer survivor and requested we get rid of our couple non stick pans years ago, thinking perhaps my wife had a strong hereditary predisposition to cancers I happily did so. ...then she (my MIL) went out and had a cigarette... so go figure :he
Whoops! I totally didn't see this response until just now and posted a new thread 🤦🏻‍♀️ I actually picked up a Lodge skillet! Thanks so much for the insight!

I will chime in here late. I have kept parrots all my life without fatalities from the teflon cooking pans. I learned that it was toxic to birds a few years ago, now I only cook on cast iron. I buy old cast iron at estate sales and such, they are smoother than the new Lodge pan I have. I now have quite a large collection, most cost me about 4-5 dollars.

I appreciate the honesty and contradictions are sometimes good, helps get a feel for different points of view. I agree that even a slight risk is too much for me. I'll be tossing the nonstick pans and purchasing some non PTFE cast iron ones asap. Thanks so much for the article and insight!

Cast Iron pans are one of the best thrift store finds. Some may need cleaned a bit but it’s not difficult and they are often higher quality than the new ones. A well cared for cast iron pan can be passed on for generations. Some of ours belonged to my great grandmother and are still in excellent shape.

My favorite egg pan is from the 50's -- a Wagner 3.

This eases my mind a little! I have some PTSD because I had a parakeet suddenly die on me and the only explanation I can give now that I'm aware of it is Teflon poisoning. But I definitely feel much better now with my cast iron pan.
Also you got quite the deal! I'm impressed!

I'm sorry you lost your parakeet. :(

I think you have to get teflon very hot for it to off-gas. But, I have burned pans by forgetting! So, no more non stick for me.
