Tell me why you keep Roosters...

Too many roosters may result in the over mating of your hens. Hens can loose feathers on their backs and the roosters claws can cause gashes in their skin. Since the hens are kind of thin skinned this can be a problem.

I personally love roosters. I believe they are Glorious and Beautiful. A rooster likes a group of about 10 hens. Currently l have 3 roosters and no hens but I have some coming in the mail.

If you want to keep them for breeding you can try building separate pens so you can control whom is breeding with whom. You may need to put chicken saddles on the pullets to protect their hides and feathers.

I have only had one mean nasty rooster. He was good with the flock so I tolerated him until he was taken out by a hawk.

The rest of my roosters were very sweet. They got along but even they had a pecking order. My girls were being subjected to multiple breeding and I know first hand the damage of which I spoke.

Roosters are really good for protecting the hens.

My poor Duke not only has the girls pluck his beard, the molting just stole the last of his tail feathers. I need to lock him away from the EE girls for a few weeks so he can hopefully grow in a beard. He chats at me when he sees me and begs for me to let him and his ameraucana hens out. Well he chats ALL the time. I don't think he's capable of not talking. He only crows a few times a day. Mostly in the morning when him and my other boys get into a contest with the neighbors rooster that they can just barely hear.

His ears are tuned in to the sound of the back door. As soon as I open it when he's out, he comes running to beg for a treat, calling the hens over. I opened the door earlier this year and saw this.

LMAO that is the site to see!!! Love it!

I borrowed a roo, and he had a naked bottom, and one of my hens poked his bum and he said "Owww!" just like a guy would have said if you pinched his tush. when I brought him back to his own farm first thing his girls did was poke his bum.

Mine does the same thing to King Roo! It's funny to watch them do that, but I feel for him. Owwww!

I keep roosters because I'm a sucker! I began my adventures in the chicken kingdom 2 years ago!

My first two roosters are brothers - Bobo (he likes his girls big boned!)

and Rocky ...

They are sons of a rooster named BuckBuck
that belonged to a good friend of mine who turned me into a Banty lover! BuckBuck was a sweetie and lived to 7 before he passed on!

And then there was the day BeeBee was born, they only egg to hatch out in the incubator - inevitably I spoiled him rotten and just couldn't get rid of him because of his daddy and his grand-daddy! BeeBee has indoor privileges and will play with the dog and share his bread with him too!

And then there's my rooster Pitiful
he was the "egg" I almost threw away but peeped just in the nick of time! When he was born he was so frail he lived in the incubator for 10 days! And when he was growing up, one day I looked into his eyes and realized who his mama was, she was a dear sweet hen named "Loretta" (because she was born in a coal bucket! I swear!) who would greet me at the door everyday and loved attention, she was my favorite! I had to have her put down because she had suffered paralysis from heat stroke - I was totally devastated I bawled my eyes out over her! And the day after I had her put down was the day I almost threw the egg, Pitiful, away! Pitiful is such a "lover" - he treats me like I'm his hen LOL.

And then I bought my first Serama rooster, Jax -
I was so proud I had to build another pen of course!

And then there are two more little roosters I ended up keeping, I was going to sell them BUT then ended up having the dog attack, all the boys survived Thank God! But after having lost so many hens, I decided to put the four young'uns I had (2 hens & 2 roo's) in the main pen with Rocky... I was a little pessimistic about what would happen but much to my surprise Rocky accepted them!!! I would finally name those two when I realized who their mothers were...

Muffin -

his mother was named Cupcake.

And then Cookie,
his mother was named Cocoa.

But do you think I was done with roosters? Ummm nope! One fine morning I woke up to Mille de Fleur d'Uccles for sale on Craigslist - I almost cried because I had a gorgeous Mille who was killed by the dogs too, I stared at the ad for a couple hours and then gave into my weakness - I ended up buying Squeaky & Lady LeFleur and the 6 kids! I have to make another pen now for that family HA LOL Here is Squeaky who is madder than you know what at me because he wants to get in the dirt and I don't have his pen finished yet!

... and somewhere in between, Daryl, wiggled his way in when a really awesome friend of mine gave me a batch of Serama's as a gift to help me heal from the tragedy of the 2 dog attack last June!

I keep roosters & chickens because they bring me happiness! When my friend started me out with 6 Banty's two years ago I had no idea that these precious little creatures would help me with my PTSD & Fibromyalgia! Every love waking up to them every morning & and then tucking them in every night! They motivate me to get outside, because of them I am also distracted from my aches & pains so I get my exercise which helps me stay more physically fit! Currently I own 32 chickens - or more like 32 chickens own me!
