Tell your 'what the heck was that thing?' scary story

Im a firm believer in the "other" unexplained side of life. My Grandmother read tea leaves. She did it for fun, but when her friends started comming to her for "live advice" she stopped. My mom and I were playing around one day with a deck of cards. We started to play a ESP game where she would mentally "send" me the card number and suit and I'd "recieve" it. We got every card right.

So, with that, I started to think that maybe just maybe there was more out in the world then we see. I house sat for years. I would stay at my clients homes while they were on vacation and care for the pets and plants and such. I firmly believe houses have "energy" all their own. One of my best clients had the coolest house to stay in. It was such a happy house. I loved sitting for her. Her house was just so rejuvenating.
Another client's house was horrible. I only stayed twice. She was going through a really nasty divorce and her kids were teens. The house was very dark, very cold, and very unhappy. I would sleep in the guest room and get the dogs and cats with me and close the door at night time. The room also had a fish tank in it so I had running water-for that bad spirits wont cross running water thing. As part of my house sitting thing, I'd check on all the rooms just incase a window broke or something. I opened her daughters room and was taken aback. Her daughter's room had some serious bad mojo going on. Black candles, weird pictures on her walls, and a Witch board (Ouija board) on her dresser. That type of stuff. Now Im open minded, but I was like no freakin' way am I staying here again. When the home owner came back I told her to cleanse her house and that I was not comming back. I still get the creeps all these many years later just thinking about that sad sad house.
I also stayed for a dear friend. He had a nice house that always reminded me of a sweet old man. Once night I was staying in his guest room when I heard a shuffle on the carpet. Then I heard the rocker squeek and a newpaper being turned. Im like what the heck! My friends cat was sitting on the bed, mid bath, and just jumped up and took off. I got up and closed the door. The next night I was reading in bed with the cat at the foot of the bed and had just turned off the light. I had left a night light in the bathroom across the hall on and as I was just getting comfortable, I heard the shuffle on the carpet again only this time I saw a shadow on the carpet from the doorway and the cat started to meow. I was freaked! I said "Ok, ghost, I see you and if you want to read and rock, that is fine. Just please dont come in here. I will go insane if I actually saw you so, please just stay out of this room." The shadow moved on and went to the rocker. I never saw the ghost but I would see his "shadow" every night. He would always stop at the door and "check" on me.

MFB - ooooohhhh! If there's a next time, please take a pic of the print! Or if you can make a plaster mold of it! Wow

What else happened over there? I would read 100 pages!

When I was 12 yrs old, my mother and I were woken up by a blood curdling scream. No one in the house was affected.
The next morning, our family was informed that my father's mother had passed away.

When I was 18 yrs old, I worked for a security guard company. My brother was a shift sup, so was due to come out to get me, but was running late.
I was standing guard at a logging company site in rural Redding, in way northern CA.
The other guard came so we made the rounds then talked for a bit. He told me this story...
He had grown up in the area and a few years back he and two friends were fishing, they set up camp and went to bed.
They heard a sound and woke up, saw a large man shape in the moon light, at the edge of their camp.
One fired a gun in the air, and what ever is was went into the lake (it was a shallow-ish lake) it waded into it and WALKED into the water, thru it, and the water
only got about thigh to low waist high on the creature
They could see it in the moon light.
One of them went in after it, and the water was chest high on him.

I've heard of ball lightening but I've never personally seen it. My mother described it to me after she saw it some years ago and my ex had seen it bob through a pasture one time. If it was ball lightening. I don't think the experts still know exactly what 'ball lightening' is either...

Sounds like ball lightning to me. Wow, how cool that you witnessed it!

I am pretty sure the OP's experience was lightning, too. It doesn't always strike during a storm.

I will try and keep this short but detailed...I will say it is the most bizarre thing to ever happen on our farm.

One night my mom and I got back from the county fair around midnight. She was exhausted so I offered to feed/check on our two colts. They were the only two horses in a small paddock on our farm, the rest were split into 4 seperate fields and were turned out at night. It was a very hot night. Anyway on my way to the barn I got this eerie feeling from the treeline that borders mine and my neighbor's property, but shrugged it off as "fear of the dark". Checked on the colts, shut down the barn and hurried back toward my house. Once I made it to the porch I noticed the neighbors dogs (who were normally very quiet) were barking in the same area I had my "feeling". But I shrugged it off again.

So in my house I get ready for bed, open the windows because it was so hot, and just start closing my eyes when I hear some rustling in an apple tree. This apple tree was laden with grapevines that touched the ground and the branches hung low. We had 3 Thoroughbreds pastured in with the apple tree, so I figured they were walking under it to head out the front pasture--but along with this rustling I heard no footfalls. But I feel asleep thinking nothing of it.

Skip ahead to 4 am and I hear this strange "neighing" sound that is super loud. So obnoxious it was that my mom said "what is that?" We hurried to the window and the noise had mutated to a bird-sounding nicker and was much quieter. But we were alarmed because the horses were running and calling to each other--so my mom and I thought we had some horse thieves and quickly ran outside with some flashlights.

We saw no vehicles by the road and quickly did a head count on all the horses. They were all fine but slightly spooked, they stayed as close as they could to the barns. So we stood and listened and the "calling noise" appeared to fly into the woodline at the edge of our farm where ever we went, like it was flanking us. The whole time the "call" it was making seemed to change--it was really freaky. After awhile the noise disappeared and we went to bed.

A couple days later one of my precious cats went missing. And that night we heard this odd mutating noise making again. We were both in our house in our beds and my mom *whispered* my name--the noise stopped, like it heard us. After awhile we heard it again. This time it was in our back field. So we went out with a pellet pistol and a flashlight--again all our horses were up by the barn and alert. The noise became muffled and finally stopped. My cat returned 4 days later, even though we searched the whole farm and woods. He had a lot of hair missing out of his tail and has never been the same about being outside since.

Where this gets really strange is the fact we told nobody about these events. And one day my mom was visiting my neighbor and got ready to leave, it was dark and she was going to walk home (we live pretty close). My neighbor REFUSED to let her walk home. Turned every light on outside her house and was just acting bizarre to the point my mom asked "what's up?" My neighbor said that her daughter had something chase her one night on her way home. The girl said there was something like a cat-human hybrid/gargoyle that was white with no hair and pointed teeth, skin wings (like a bat) freaky eyes that were black but seemed like mirrors--it was also making an otherworldy hissing noise. It chased her home and she was so frightened she could not get her door open (which was not locked), and her mother was unable to open it because the girl was so frantic.

Then, my cousin told me about his friend that was camping and encountered a strange creature with a similar description to the one above. He was an avid camper who was taking advantage of our awesome hot nights summer but ceased his pastime after this encounter. After hearing about these other experiences we began to wonder if what we had experienced with our horses and cat, the noise in the tree, the dogs barking, may have been the creature these people encountered. All of our stories happened within the same week.

My mom and I never saw what it was that riled our horses up--we just know it was very unusual and out of the ordinary. We have never had this happen before or since this experience. I tried to chalk up our experience as a bird, but have never heard a creature like that since--and we are a hop, skip and a jump away from creeks, river, swamps and woods. Whatever it was, it's a good and freaky campfire story!

Peaches, that thoroughly FREAKED ME OUT!

The one about the blood curdling scream and the mother dieing scared me too.

They are all oddly strange and scary...

My neighbors and I like to freak ourselves out by making up scary storys outside in the dark. We sit up in our treehouse and tell these freaky scary stories... almost like Peaches Lee's story, but made-up.

Well One of my scary experiences are

Well I was about 6 years old, and My parents where leaving for the bar but before they left my dad said "girls do the dishes, and please clean the kitchen" so me and my sisters started to do the dishes. And my mom and dad kissed us all good bye and drove out, and left for the bar. about half way through the dishes from my parents room I heard someone yell "GIRLS!!!!" (sound JUST like my dad) and I said to heather my sister "did you hear that!" she said "YES! I heard dad" I almost pooped myself because my dad and mom left.
I still wonder to this day What the heck called for us and sounded like my dad, BUT HE WAS NOT HOME, THE ONLY PEOPLE HOME WHERE HEATHER JACKIE AND ME! and we where doing dishes together!

I don't normally talk about these kinda things, cause people think I'm crazy enough....

this house was built by my great, great grandfather. Only room that is modern was my daughters, it had been added on about 10 years before I moved here. No one in my family will visit my house. I'd always thought it was weird, but the only person in my entire family that will even come into my house is my grandfather, and he won't go past the front door. Since the day I moved in I've never felt alone in this house...always felt like someone was watching me...and for 3 years I lived here completely alone. Things constantly go missing or are moved in this house. ALL THE TIME. I lived alone, and I'd find my keys in the fridge, or I'd find money moved...The back bedroom also has a dent in the wall, where the door kept opening and hitting it. Was having to patch that wall every month. I finally installed carpet to make the door kinda stick if it opened, still would have to patch the wall. I never thought too much into it though, until I started seeing things...

One night I was sitting up in the living room with a friend of mine talking...I was facing the kitchen, and saw a shadow of a man walk from my bathroom, through my kitchen and into that back bedroom (now my daughters room). At the time the back bedroom was just empty, it had a spare bed and a lamp on a nightstand, but not much else. So I of course jumped up and checked the entire house...nothing. I sat back down, my friend thinking I was totally insane...and I didn't mention it. She stayed in that room with her husband that night, and the next morning she asked me "Were you knocking on the door at 3:00 am?" Of course not...So I thought nothing of it, and just kinda let it go. This was a FULL FIGURED MAN. You couldn't see through him, he was just all black. Like, a silhouette, or a shadow. Every once in awhile I still see him pass by me in the bathroom.

A few months later, my mom came to stay for a week, and one morning she woke me up at 5:00 am asking about the little boy. I of course thought she was INSANE, and go "What the hell are you talking about?" She related this story to me: she woke up and saw a little boy in overalls and a red shirt swinging the bedroom door and letting it hit the wall. It'd bounce off the wall, he's swing it back. My mom thinking it was one of my uncle's son's said "Go find Emily". She went back to sleep. She wakes up a few minutes later, kid is still standing there, still swinging the door. My mom gets kinda angry and says "GO FIND EMILY. I'm going back to sleep awhile." When she said that, the kid disappeared, but the door kept swinging. Swing, hit the wall, bounce back, swing, hit the wall, bounce back. That was of course when she woke me up. I normally could have explained it away with it being early, her seeing things and the wind, but I had thick carpet in that room because I thought the door was coming open by itself and hitting the wall making the dent. You had to FORCE that door open and force it against the wall. After that, I just always kept that door shut. Anybody came over to stay, I'd tell them before they went to sleep to keep the door shut. Sometimes they'd mention knocking in the middle of the night, but no one ever saw the little boy.

When my daughter was born we tore up the carpet, put down wood flooring and I remodeled that room into her nursery. I'd sit in there for hours before she was born. She slept beside us in a bassinet for the first 6 months. When she started sleeping through the night I let her sleep in her crib in her room. Everything was fine until I noticed she'd start babbling and laughing to herself when I left the room. You could hear her through the baby monitor just laughing and babbling...I just kinda ignored it and thought she was her mothers child...She was almost a year old when I noticed her playing with someone. only, no one is there. She'll laugh and giggle, and talk to no one. She'll share her toys with no one. I spoke to her doctor about her possibly having an imaginary friend, and her doctor said she is too young. I don't even take her in that room anymore. We locked the door, she sleeps in our bedroom in her crib now. I have no idea if she's playing with that little boy, but the idea creeps me out enough that we no longer use that room.
