When I was a teenager we lived in a house on the edge of town. The back yard opened up onto open prairie behind us. In the summer when it was hot I would sleep outside on the deck. One night I woke up from a dead sleep. My heart was thumping and I felt like someone was watching me. I rolled over and scanned the backyard quietly but I couldnt see anything. The feeling intensified and the hair on the back of my neck and on my arms stood up and I broke out in goosebumps. A feeling of panic hit me and I sat up and yelled "whos there" Some tall grass at the far end of the yard rustled and I ran for the back door. I ran inside and locked the door behind me . Hit the backyard lights and saw some tall grass moving but never saw what it was that spooked me so bad. I can only guess that it was a predator of some kind. Ive been startled by a bear, survived a near fatal dog attack and been threatened with serious harm on more than one occasion by my fellow man yet that was the single most scary thing that has ever happened to me. My heart still races when I think about that.
A friend of mine told me he had the same reaction once when he was hunting. He felt like he was being watched, his heart started to race and he got goosebumps. He scanned the area slowly and as he turned he saw a cougar behind him in a tree watching him. I wonder sometimes if it had been a big cat in the grass sitting there watching me sleep.
