Tell your 'what the heck was that thing?' scary story

My parents house is the place I grew up. We have all heard plenty over forty plus years, lol.

I have a story! This actually happened last night.
In my dream I had last night, there were short, strange screams. Every time there was a scream there flashed a scary scene. I don't remember what the scene was, but it sure was scary! The combination of the eerie scream and the scene was so freaky that I jolted awake. But the dream went on and the screams kept happening. I don't remember clearly what happened but I had a little freak-out moment because I was half-asleep and freaked out of my mind. Then I realized that I wasn't dreaming anymore, and that the screams were real. In fact, they were coming from right outside my window. They were short, loud, and repetitive screams. They repeated about every 5 seconds.
My first instinct was to get up and look out my window. By the time I got to the window, the screams were already getting quieter as whatever made the sound headed south. I looked in the direction of where the screams were coming from but I didn't see anything that would've been making the sound. I got up shakily and told my mom what I had heard. She had heard it, too. We both went downstairs to look out the front door but we didn't find anything and the screams had faded away. I went back to bed, still a little shaky and shocked from what just happened.
I still have no idea what it was. I would think that if it were a person that was screaming, they would've been longer, louder, and there would've been crying involved also. What I heard was repetitive, loud, short screams. But they didn't sound like animal screeches or anything. I don't quite know how to explain it.
My mom and I are both very surprised that none of our neighbors got up to see what was going on. But then again, I guess most people are in a deep sleep around 2:30am.
Today as I was discussing the scenario with my mom again, she told me that as the sound trailed off, it did not go in the direction of the south, but instead moved north. If I would've looked to my right instead of my left, I would've seen whatever thing made those eerie sounds. But then again, maybe it's better that I didn't see it.......
Could have been a fox, they make an eerie screaming sound.

I thought for sure this thread would have been resurrected for the season. How disappointing. Some of the stories on here are so good. Here is a little something to bump it back up again. More "what the heck was that!" please.

When I was about 9 or 10 my Mom and I were looking for a place to rent. I wanted to live in the country really bad (kind of like now). I wanted a horse and a dog and was very passionate about it (kind of like now). Anyway, she found a place and it was perfect. Affordable, 2 bedroom house on acreage with a 2 stall barn. It was close to my Grandparents and near a great school. Not sure why, but I remember all of these details very clearly.

Naturally, I was super excited. We got the keys and drove out to take a look. I remember thinking that there was nothing that would stop my dream now, I didn't care if the place was falling apart or on fire. I only cared that there was a barn! I was dreaming of a new puppy when we pull up to a bungalow style house on a small knoll.

You know how some houses look like faces? Well, this house looked like a face. Door in the middle, two big picture windows on each side, wide front porch. New blue-green paint. It would have been cute. Except that it wasn't. We pulled up and the house looked sinister for no reason whatsoever. I remember having the distinct sudden thought, "This house will eat you". OOOhhhhKaaaayyy.

So, my Mom is excited of course because this place looks rather well put together and is exactly what we wanted - and it's affordable. Only. I can't get out of the car. I can not imagine walking up to the place. I am terrified and feeling a bit sick. She cajoles me out of the car, admonishing me for my sudden sullen attitude. The minute I step out of the car I can feel it. Horrible dread and deep darkness, heavy feet will not move. This house will eat you. This house will eat you. Now I'm sad because I realize that either we are moving into this terrible place, or we aren't, and either way it is definitely not what I want.

She is on the porch now looking in the windows exclaiming, "Hardwood floors! Look at the porch! The kitchen is such a cute color!". I can't move, still stuck near the car. Mom is growing irritated now, so I manage to walk up the stairs, this twisted feeling growing more insistent and I am beginning to panic, like we just shouldn't be here. At all. Run. With every step this feeling grows worse and I am about to cry. It's cold. I look in the window and it's as if someone is suddenly looking back at me. I lurch backwards in a panic and scuttle off the porch. No. No. No. No. No. There is no way I can do this.

Mom is starting to "get it" now. She goes inside for a look. Because adults, you know, aren't just going to give up. Ok, I go down to the road and walk around the corner for a view of the barn and pasture. It's horribly perfect. Nice, solid little barn, good fences, open pasture near some trees. View of the animals from the kitchen window. I look back at the house hoping that maybe I am just dead wrong. Nope. House will eat you.

Mom is out of the place pretty fast. She comes over and looks at the pasture. Now we are both sullen. We get back in the car. She asks needlessly, "Well, what do you think?" I remember saying, "I could never live in that house in a million years". She just quietly agreed.

It really was sad. We never found a good place in the country and ended up in a duplex in town.

Not to freak anyone out or anything, but this is The Rake. It sits at the end of your bed, night after night. You can hear it whispering in your head to get out, to leave and never come back. It slowly drives people insane until they either leave, or it kills them.

Could be wrong on a few details, but that's what I remember about it. Several stories about it do include a dog barking at nothing. Don't worry though, it's just a creepypasta. Like Slenderman and smile dog.
