Raven-How can I raid the baby brooders if they are not laying
I know my Marans started laying then slacked off recently but the old lady I got from Jen who has laid about a dozen eggs in a year total-talk about one free loader has laid 3 this week
so she's going to move into the Marans pen instead of the old lady pen and maybe just maybe...
Okla-Doodle I don't have hamburgs..hatched some on a swap last year and they were real pretty but didn't keep them because of space.
I hatched 64 and still have them hatching on this last hatch
I can be called Blue Chicken Farm shortly...so many blue Rocks it's almost nuts...almost.Then all the other blues
For big birds for sale we have Buff Orpington pullets , Blue Rock, Barred Rock-black and blue,EE,OE,BLRW,leghorn cross,Mixes
Bantam- Cochins and Ameraucana
Anyone want to buy live meaties? They're Ideal's red broilers, I'm going to start school soon and think that butchering them is gonna become annoying and would prefer to sale as many as I can for someone else to butcher (they're going on 13 weeks now and are still smaller than I think they should be)... Also, I have a few golden comets I wouldn't mind to sale.... Have to downsize so DH will let me get my incubator and hatch chicklings...
We have blue Rocks I'm limiting the Orps to lavender and a few buff I have to watch how many colors or breeds I have going.I do have a 4 month blue barred Roo and some pullets around 2 months in barred In solid blue they are all recent hatches so just fuzzy still. Will be hatching these now all Spring since everyone likes blue chickens
It's around 28 and windy here this morning! We had a lovely snow - - only about an inch stuck, but the flakes were large and just beautiful. Of course, I was the only fool in the neighborhood standing outside at the crack of dawn looking up at the snow!
Holly, I'm glad the BCM girl is laying again! She's not very old, so you should get some good years out of her. Just looked at my records; she was hatched in Feb. 2009.
Hey, here she is! Isn't she cute.
And here's her brother at five weeks - - not so cute.
Don't the BCMs look like turkey poults, or little pterodactyls? I sure like that breed, though. They were so sweet, so laid back and just friendly. The Marans are so goofy looking as chicks; they were just so homely that they were adorable. They were probably the most fun to raise. If I had more space I would definitely have Marans again. I guess they can be sort of dopey in a large flock, but as far as interacting with people I found them delightful.
OklaDD, you need to take a run out to Holly's in spring and see all those birds. It's nice to interact with the different breeds - - I always find a surprise or two at her place, birds I had not seen "in person" and breeds I didn't know I would like. Just be sure to bring extra cages!
stanglover, I will ask around to see if anyone around here is looking for meaties. Had someone ask awhile back, but it's been a few months. I have family going back and forth from Nash to Knox . . .
CityGirl, sounds like you are staying busy! Whatcha rehearsing for?
All of my old ladies are the 09 hatch but they are like family and still lay..guess when they quit we will just have a Senior pen maybe a palm tree and an umbrella for them who knows! I can't wait to see how she does with our boy.Hatched 2 Marans chicks this week so the numbers are going up slowly. My Blue/Splash Coppers are getting big so in a few more months a little more color in the Marans pens.
I think your going to see several changes here this year..selling off several of the more common birds here...a nice young flock of BO are for sale and thinking seriously about selling off the black/blue Ameraucana flock and all the barred blue Rocks to start. There are a few breeds the more I work with the more I want to work with them-although I have never met a chicken I don't like I don't need to have them all
I went ahead and ordered through brinsea's website and got the mini advance, I'm also waiting for my egg cooker from bed, bath and beyond... it's so cute, its in the shape of a chicken
Jen, if it helps any they're not cornishx meaties they're red broilers... I have 13 of them, hoping to get 10 dollars a piece but they're just so small...
I may just have to butcher them at the end of January or something....
Jenski congrats on egg. What a cute cockeral. Can't wait till our go broody again and hatch there own this year. We are keeping everyone since we need to replace chickens. Although I might give a trio away later in spring if someone wants to start a breeding flock of partridge rocks here local. Do not know yet on that one.
