Went out to water the chickens to find that my 5 EE in the small coop gone. Nothing but feathers left I guess a raccoon got the roof up and got inside. No blood or anything else around inside or outside the coop. Just lots of feathers. I knew I should have put a latch on the roof but thought its over 2ft off the ground and not very light in weight so never thought a coon could get in. So now the only bantams I have are my silkies. Going to put latch and d rings on everything plus buy me a live trap and see what I get.

That's Horrible! I am so sorry.

I hope you catch what ever it was.

I just stopped in to ask a question. We leave tomorrow to head back home and I am already thinking about what needs to be done next week.

I need advice....

I have 2 silkies that are 11 weeks old and the other 20 are full size chicks that are 15 weeks old. I need to put the 2 silkies in with the other chicken but I am not sure how. They all live in the coop and go out to the run together but are divided by wire. I have tried letting the silkies out for a little bit from time to time but one of the other ones picks at them.
How do I need to do this? What is the best age to do this. I will have a new set of chicks at the end of this month so will need the brooder area. What steps would you take? I know to expects some pecking but how do I know what is to much? Should I put them out during the night??? ANY advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

How everyone is well, Hung I saw your pics that looks like it was scary. Glad all is well!!

I ended up having to let them work it out. They had enough room to run away and do their own thing in between attacks. I did supervise for awhile though. Now they get along unless Blue tries to eat first ;)

Question! I read somewhere that you are not supposed to feel the breathing when you pick up a bird. Mine free range and have free access to feed all day, but I can still feel it when I pick them up. Even Pearl, who's put out 5 lovely eggs in her first week.
Do I need to fatten them up? They even get treats, but not too many. They still go at their fees pretty hard. And no unusual droppings

When you merge them, they will beat on the weak one... that's is guarantee. So the older they are, the better they can withstand the beating. This explains why young chicks of 1-2 weeks got beaten to death, while chicken of 4 mos and above got to fighting and lost and knew to run away. Another words.. when merge, the older the better.

Also, to reduce the beating, you can merge them in open range. This will allow space for the weak one to run away until the flock gets use to them. I will feed all of them plenty prior to merge them. This is to avoid competing for food and when full, the birds are less aggressive. Last but not least, merge them in early the day, this allows time for them to be together on open ground prior to sitting together on the roost, and allow you time to monitor them. Watch them, if the weak one got beaten so bad, then time to put them back where they were.

Good luck

I was lucky. Several cages were heavily damaged but no chicken loss

Looks like it got rough at your place. So glad you didn't lose any chickens!

Don't know if you can tell but they are trying to roost!!
Mine still roost on the ground. They get up on the roost during the day and hang out, but come night time, they all huddle on the ground.

So sorry your lost your babies Harley. Coons are very good at getting into places they shouldn't. With their little human hands, you'd be surprised what they can get into. Hope you catch the villain!!!

@A1momof3 ~ I have no experience at merging flocks yet. I do know Silkies are usually at the bottom of the pecking order. You may have to supervise them a few days once you let them out. Good luck!

Not much going on here. Working a lot, which makes me even more tired than I already am. The chicks got fresh food/water today. My 50lbs feed last for about 3 weeks before I have to refill my buckets. I went ahead and took the nest blocks off, flipped over the tubs and put in shavings for them. They are going on 17 weeks now, so thought a couple might be getting close to laying. Some are starting to get larger combs/wattles and beginning to get red. Hopefully it won't be long before they start laying.

My garden is doing much better now. Guess it just needed a bit of time and a little more fertilizer. My beans have grown to the top of my 5 ft mesh panel and are starting to attach to the pen.

Happy Father's Day to all the mom's pulling double duty. :) I know there are several on here.

Yesterday I almost finished my garage. I just have one more coat of the terra cotta to put on the long (east) side.

I had to scrape first. I started around 7:45am. It took 2.5 hours.

I got the second coat on the north wall.

Just one coat left and I am all done. The trim is done. I was going to do that today bit it is too windy to be on a ladder.

Sasha helped me too.

And so did this little guy.

After I was done outside (12 hours later - mowed the lawn and picked veggies) I made this for supper.

Hope everyone had a good weekend. :)

You are one busy lady! Hey, Sasha is a typical female--had to get some highlights in her fur. Dinner looks good!

Harley, I cleaned out my waterers and Ken spray-painted them white. We shall see if it keeps the mold away.

Lisa :)
