When you merge them, they will beat on the weak one... that's is guarantee. So the older they are, the better they can withstand the beating. This explains why young chicks of 1-2 weeks got beaten to death, while chicken of 4 mos and above got to fighting and lost and knew to run away. Another words.. when merge, the older the better. Also, to reduce the beating, you can merge them in open range. This will allow space for the weak one to run away until the flock gets use to them. I will feed all of them plenty prior to merge them. This is to avoid competing for food and when full, the birds are less aggressive. Last but not least, merge them in early the day, this allows time for them to be together on open ground prior to sitting together on the roost, and allow you time to monitor them. Watch them, if the weak one got beaten so bad, then time to put them back where they were. Good luck
Wow that's a lot of good info Hung, thanks. I've got a lot of work to do out there tomorrow after being home for a week so I'm going to try and see what happens while I'm out there for most of the day. Will let y'all know!
Looks like it got rough at your place. So glad you didn't lose any chickens! Mine still roost on the ground. They get up on the roost during the day and hang out, but come night time, they all huddle on the ground. :idunno So sorry your lost your babies Harley. Coons are very good at getting into places they shouldn't. With their little human hands, you'd be surprised what they can get into. Hope you catch the villain!!! @A1momof3 ~ I have no experience at merging flocks yet. I do know Silkies are usually at the bottom of the pecking order. You may have to supervise them a few days once you let them out. Good luck! Not much going on here. Working a lot, which makes me even more tired than I already am. The chicks got fresh food/water today. My 50lbs feed last for about 3 weeks before I have to refill my buckets. I went ahead and took the nest blocks off, flipped over the tubs and put in shavings for them. They are going on 17 weeks now, so thought a couple might be getting close to laying. Some are starting to get larger combs/wattles and beginning to get red. Hopefully it won't be long before they start laying. My garden is doing much better now. Guess it just needed a bit of time and a little more fertilizer. My beans have grown to the top of my 5 ft mesh panel and are starting to attach to the pen.
Submission squat. Right now when you walk around them and try to pick them up they run around but when they start to get ready to lay eggs they will do the submission squat like when the rooster goes to mount them. Watch for that as for another sign.
Happy Father's Day to all the mom's pulling double duty. :) I know there are several on here. Yesterday I almost finished my garage. I just have one more coat of the terra cotta to put on the long (east) side. I had to scrape first. I started around 7:45am. It took 2.5 hours. I got the second coat on the north wall. Just one coat left and I am all done. The trim is done. I was going to do that today bit it is too windy to be on a ladder. Sasha helped me too. And so did this little guy. After I was done outside (12 hours later - mowed the lawn and picked veggies) I made this for supper. Hope everyone had a good weekend. :)
Wow wonder women! I take 2 of what ever it is your having. I need a few days like that to get stuff done around here! It all looks really good!!!

I tried Coon Curry at a friend's house before... too much fat.

If i was the cook, I would try BBQ as we never have bad bbq.

BTW, in Austin, there was Franklin's BBQ. They are rated as No. 1 in TX (some said No 1 in the US). Still I cannot eat there as the long waiting line makes this impossible. Recently, many BBQs started moving to San Marcos ... yummy

Thank you for the compliments. :)

IT'S DONE!!!!
I finished the garage this morning! It took 5 weeks (including the weekend I couldn’t paint due to rain). Now I need to paint the house. The white on the garage is the color that I am painting all the trim and the porch. The brown will be an accent color on the porch squares.
I'm still trying to decide if I want to paint the side door to match the house doors.
It's kind of windy out there! Glad I finished before the winds got too high.
I did it all by myself too!

Sasha helped me again and got more highlights. ;) I haven't taken her picture yet though. I didn't see my other helper today. I wonder if he has moved on now.

Harley - I hope you catch whatever varmint that nabbed your chickens. It does sound like raccoons. I've seen some huge ones around here. You should be able to make a nice pair of slippers and cap from a big one. ;)

Wow Laurie!
You were busy!

Harley, catch any raccoons??

I'm trying to re do may backyard a little. Nothing huge.
We're going to try and transition to the nesting boxes, so I'm repainting it first.
It was an old weathered red, I'm painting it a "French Blue"....lol
Then I'm tearing down that little pen..because it's falling apart. Lol.
There was a tarp on top that ended up catching all the rain we had a bit ago and just bent the whole thing.

Wish I could work on that now instead of working! Bleh
