Texas

Hello! We are outside Fort Worth. Very new to chickens. I have lots of dumb questions in spite of my great chicken book and patient lady at Tractor Supply. I have posted a few of them. Is there a chicken meet up? Where I could meet some of my fellow Fort Worth chicken friends...? or Weatherford perhaps, or Granbury, or Stephenville perhaps?

TIA.

Now, we all know that isn't true. Just thought I would turn some heads. Anyway, if you're in the market for good books, I really love the Storey's guides. Lots of useful stuff in there. And we're here for those times when chickens don't really follow the books, which is almost every day, it seems.

AH HA!!!!!! i remember now!!

Can someone explain the use of diatomaceous earth? i see lots of talk about it, but have no idea what you use it for? feel like a bad chicken daddy if its osmehting they need and im not using it!
DE is... controversial... Especially when it comes to chickens Some folks add it to the feed every day or feed it free choice. Others use it in the coops. Many find they don't want to make the extra expense. I sure do use it in the garden, for slugs, and I use it in my sheep, because I think it might help with internal parasites. I've never used it with my chickens. There are lots of folks who don't really believe it works at all. To each their own.

Wow - that's an awesome variety. Where in Texas are you located? Keep us updated on what hatches. :)

yinepu,

do you use it? if its good enough for you then im sure Jesus himself would use it on his chickens.

I have in the past on dogs and poultry.. but I used it as a preventative... I feel it works better that way

to be honest.. I haven't used it in the past year or so because all I could find locally was the garden variety.. as of last week i found out that my regular feed store can get livestock DE (saw a nice big bag sitting there which surprised me a bit since I didn't think they carried it at all)...

So when I go back for feed later this week I need to grab a bag.. plus the salt and mineral for my goats that i forgot to grab when I was there last!

yeah it is.. some people swear that only harsh pesticides will work.. others wait and try DE when they are dealing with a heavy infestation. Those are the people who swear it's bogus, doesn't work or who refuse to even try it.

As a preventative i have found it works great.. but like I said.. that's from my experience only.. if you're in an area where there is a heavy parasite load you may want to go with something stronger...

btw.. adding cayenne pepper to the bird's feed also works well to rid them of certain intestinal parasites (black head especially) and acts as a preventative. plus in my experience it doesn't affect the taste of the eggs or meat (would be great though if I could get pre-seasoned meat or cajun eggs that way)!
