to Stelle.. I know too well what it's like to be hit by tornados.. had the roof of a barn I was in lifted off while I was tending to some baby goats... plus have had a few too many other "too close for comfort" run-ins with the darn things

on another note....

I have three bators shut down for cleaning.. still have several more packed with eggs...

the newest yokohama eggs arrived yesterday and are in the bator.

still cleaning up debris from the storms (like I needed more stuff to do this weekend.. ugh)

Little wing, im not lookin to show the birds any time soon. i just think its neat to get a line with a name attached to it! lol. we can jsut cross some dull black in there and get the purple out...then gotta find some copper somewhere...

I spent lots of time and money trying to get my Black Copper Marans to SOP, but everyone of the males ended up with white tail feathers. I finally gave up and started a dark egg project with them. I'm in the first phase and can hardly wait on the chicks to grow and start laying..
Ya...Birchen based birds are not easy to breed. The Black Copper Marans seems to be a variety that gives lots of people head aches.

You will have to give me up-dates on the Dark Egg project. I would love to see what you learn about the egg color. About everything I know about the dark egg color is from personal observation. Others of couse offer their theory on breeding for dark eggs, but few if any trap nest so they don't know where their color is coming from and what I have been observing doesn't really follow with the conventions most people are offering.

My project is not very scientific. I've started with Davis line (3 black and 1 blue) that only lay a 4 and an occasional 5. None of the girls had anything special about them besides conformation. Very little copper is showing. I've had a blue copper cock shipped to me from a lady that wins lots of egg shows and I will be line breeding until I get the darkest eggs. One thing that will also be happening is the cock has much more copper than would be SOP, Probably 40% of his breast. Otherwise, he is a nice bird. I'm hoping the color balances and I get some blacks that show much more color than the parent stock. If I'm able to get SOP birds that will be a big plus.

Wow it is hot out there !! I went out to double check water and found a white leghorn cock in one of the wire pens in the barn down. Plenty of water, in the shade of the 2 sided tractor barn. Everyone else in the rack is fine. He did have a "mohawk" comb, looks like he lost the tips to frost bite and his existing comb was thickened.
On a happy note one of the broodies has a Guinea keet, 9 more to go. Have 4 mystery ducks (3 black with white spots, one light "chipmunk" from a very small egg) hatch last night and one Rio grand poult. Nice to come home to this morning, everyone looks good.
The kennel dogs have their pools but enjoyed a nice cool hosing down. Thermometer shows 107 right now!

Hi!

Here are some pictures of my new chicks and their momma, Stretch.

Stretch, Australorp, sitting on 11 Speckled Sussex eggs

Here's one

Here's two

We have seen 3, but don't know how many she is sitting on. :)

I have decided to do the same thing and just work on egg color... The blue pullet I sent pics of has started laying.
