Thanks for the advice everyone is giving on the bachelor pad for the roosters. So why are we keeping all the roosters? Are you seeing which one you want to keep, you just like roosters, or are you planning on culling them down the road?

Lisa :)

and me.. well these are our very first chicks.. everyone has one they picked from the start and there is no way my boys could rehome or slaughter them.. down the road is one thing but after losing one br chick the first night and tears for days..think these guys have a home here for life no matter what sex they are.

The birds we have take a while to mature and actually still do some growing after a year old. So we have to see who will turn out the best for breeding. They will be culled as defects show up or until they all are similar and big enough to make a decision.

Then also have to keep a "back up" breeding male for safety in case something happens to the main breeding male. We wound up with some cocks that are non-standard colors, so we have even more males than we would normally have since we have some color projects going on.

This spring's hatch yielded us 17 cockerels - 1 is already going to be dinner due to a side sprig and low wing carriage, 1 is safe from culling due to parentage/color, and the rest are just growing out. Lot of crowing going on around here.

We have one rooster we're keeping for life because he survived a predator attack and we found him 3 days later after we thought he was dead, so he's kind of special now. The rest of our roosters will be for breeding purposes. I'll be keeping lots of my roos to find which ones I like better, which ones make the chicks I want, etc.

Eventually we want to raise meat birds too.

I'm excited, I should be getting a box of chickies today. or tomorrow :)

I'm getting 3 each of some olive eggers, cream legbars, lemon cuckoo orpingtons, silver spangled hamburgs and mille fluer leghorns. That will be 6 legbars for me, 4 hens and 2 roos, so I'll probably wait a while to see which rooster I want to keep long term.
