There a place in Decatur that has some real nice SLW I can get you in contact with him if interested

Sure thing... I had bought some very nice looking SLW chicks  from him, however, one of my dogs had them for breakfast one early morning...so all I have left now are my Muscovy.  Like you, I have had the hardest time finding some "heritage quality" SLWs, and I have not been able to find Columbian dottes either...so I may go up to Spring Branch and get some white ones i saw up there.

I found some nice ones in Seguin. Then the coon. But he had another hatch, so I bought more lol

Good lord, I woke up this morning at 4:30 to go get some water, and I smelled smoke or something really sulfurry in my LR and Kitchen. I looked and my fridge was off, OTR micro was off and deep freezer, and AC were off. Woke up DH, and told him I smelled smoke etc., Looks like the receptacle behind my fridge caught fire and burnt up half the electrical outlets in my kitchen!

I freaked out because my Bator is plugged in in there and I thought I lost my eggs, but luckily it was on a different breaker. Is that wrong that I was more worried about my chicken eggs than the thousands of dollars worth of appliances? Lol. Luckily the freezer and fridge still work, not sure about the micro yet.....

That's scary stuff FMG! Fire is one of my biggest fears. I'd have worried about my bator, too:)

On another note, my 5 girls will be 4 weeks old tomorrow. They are pretty much fully feathered, and are starting to figure out they can "fly" out of their brooder box:) So, my plan was to move them out to their tractor tomorrow afternoon. Now the weatherman says we might be in for a lot of rain and cooler weather next week. That would be cruel to move my girls out to that, so I'm going to put netting over their box and keep them in for another week. I'll gladly do that, too, if it really means rain and cooler temps!

Glad you and your DH are okay! What a way to wake up! At least we don't have to wonder if you have 'chicken on your brain'.

Lisa :)

Looks like my girls are starting to get the hang of things! These were all in the same box too, but 1 was broken. Gotta get them to spread em out a littlw bit

QUick pic of my assortment pack. There are 2 RJF, 1rs yokie, 1 lt brahma, 2 black ausies, and 2 white leghorns(ugh, we will see about these 2)
I have 3 white leghorns, 2 are laying and 1 is a few weeks away from laying. They were very skittish as chicks and before they started to lay, now they are very calm. They still don't care to be picked up but I can handle them easily and they are very calm when they are on the nest laying. I also have 4 brown leghorns and the same is true for them except they like to hang around my feet whenever I am outside, they just don't want to be picked up. Large white eggs after a few weeks of laying and almost every day too.

Sigh.. after 2 months of 'chicken sitting' and eating fresh eggs, our time has came to an end :( My babies turned 5 weeks this week so we have a long time to go before they lay.. IF they lay (I think I have at least 4 out of the 5 roos!) we won't have our coops up and complete until mid- august (we have room to grow now but just not finished how we want them) so I am debating now.. Should we get about 6 older pullets or layers even in Aug? Or should we just get more babies from a hatchery so we know they are pullets, and go 'vegan' until they grow and lay? lol. and IF we decide on older ones.. where is the best place to find them? CL? I was looking today and see some hatcheries on there.. (I dunno if I want to do the hatchery but def can't do any more roos so I am lost really!) but very few ppl just selling older ones around here...don't want to travel 4 hours for 1 hen... 6 MAYBE but def not 1! I most def can't get anymore roos and don't want to pay $35+ for just a backyard chicken! I know it's all a personal choice.. just wondering what your opinions are.. being so new to the chicken world, where is the best place to find a healthy pullet or hen of any/all ages?
