Texas

were actually from Gettysburg area. My dad had us out hunting and teaching us about eatable plants sense I was 3... I don't get into sports much unless you consider pond fishing a sport

Very cool. Love the history around that area!

Not only that but I miss the mountains

I'm a pa mountain girl at heart although the simplistic beauty of texas is stunning!!!
Yep, I know I miss Texas every time I leave. I could never live anywhere else, it would break my heart. Being a Texan is just too much a part of my DNA. Most of my family and DHs family have been here since Texas was its own country

I had to go check on the kids, the boys were yelling and I thought they were fighting. Nope, sitting in front of their bed, where the 1 year old had climbed up and was pulling handfuls of their hair. That little girl is hell on wheels I swear. And I have no idea where she gets it from, must be from DH

Lmao I was the same way with my brothers if I didn't I would have been their football (literally!!)[/QUOTE]
Are you the youngest? I have three sons and then a baby girl and I swear she is the meanest of the bunch and shes only 1. I grew up with all boys and I am pretty rough myself. More at home with the guys at DHs fire station than with the women around here.

haha Yep, youngest in the family and 2 older brothers. You learn to take up for yourself!

We have dewberries here in east Texas but they just don't do like the ones in south Texas. Not enough berries! I have wild grapes and dewberries on this new property and will be picking some next spring! I did get a taste of the wild grapes a few weeks ago and they were pretty tart. Not enough water I'm sure. But they were beautiful and if you pop them out of the skin before eating are much better. The dewberries I saw around here in May when I first looked at the place seemed prolific but later there just weren't all that many. Yes the birds had been helping themselves but even so, not as many and not as good as the ones in south Texas.

You're in the wrong part of east TX then! Come over to my house. Last year and this year, we put up GALLONS of them. We just call them black berries though. Some are smaller, but we have some that get as big or larger thn grapes. They grow best in the clay soils between the pines and/or around oil locations. We use them for smoothies. My husband's football boys love those smoothies so much that many times throughout the summer we had a a dozen boys out here helping us pick berries. Fun times. :)

We have been extremely lucky with our girls and their laying. We have 21 hens RIR/NHRs and we get between 16 and 20 eggs most days. I feed layer pellets, bird seed as a treat, alfalfa cubes soaked in water and broken up (the LOVE this) and then cactus fruits every other day. Oyster shell free choice, and whatever leftovers they get from the kitchen.

How do you feed cactus fruits? Do you do anything to take off the spines?
