Texas

You're in the wrong part of east TX then! Come over to my house. Last year and this year, we put up GALLONS of them. We just call them black berries though. Some are smaller, but we have some that get as big or larger thn grapes. They grow best in the clay soils between the pines and/or around oil locations. We use them for smoothies. My husband's football boys love those smoothies so much that many times throughout the summer we had a a dozen boys out here helping us pick berries. Fun times. :)
That must be it - the clay soil. Soil here is almost all sand. But back in Corpus if I remember right it was clay there too.

You can hold the pear fruit with tongs and use pliers to pull them out. Or you can use a pear burner (propane torch). Ranchers sometimes burn entire clusters of pear cacti with a burner. Once the cattle figure it out, they will burn themselves eating the hot cactus. Nopalitos for cattle. Funny to watch, but it's moisture-filled candy for the cattle.

This is fastly becoming my new favorite thread! I'm not originally from texas but I love being able to live of the land! I could back in pa where I'm from but the plants are so different here! Heck we have plants in our yard called goat heads :hmm who knew there was a plant called goats head?!? We do have elderberry and texas mulberry which is my favorite berry! God brings me back to my youth when we would come home head to toe stained with mulberry juice... Ahh good times

OUCH! I learned about goatheads in Oklahoma. Man those things HURT!! Had to be careful when walking barefooted.
Are you the youngest? I have three sons and then a baby girl and I swear she is the meanest of the bunch and shes only 1. I grew up with all boys and I am pretty rough myself. More at home with the guys at DHs fire station than with the women around here.
Same here, I grew up with 4 brothers and 2 sisters. I much rather be with the guys--they did exciting things!! Go baby girl, GO!!!
