My baby, Ashes, has never laid an egg but she acts like she is going to... gets on her nest, little body moving... but it just gets worse-- she starts breathing really heavy, gasping for air, vents starts throbbing in and out, and screeches like she is in pain... then about an hour later, she calms down and goes back to normal. No egg, can't feel an egg (not that I know what one feels like). This is the third time in the last 2 weeks that she has done this. I feel so sorry for her, I just hold her and cry. This time I really thought her little heart was going to give out so I gave her some of my dogs pain medicine (figured that if she was going to die, I didn't want her to hurt) about 5 minutes after I gave her the medicine, she calmed right down...
I took her to an Aviary Vet, Dr. Finklestein, about a month ago for her sneezing and it cost $500 (Merry Christmas to me) and she is still sneezing and never got any better. Dr Finklestein was really nice but I just can't ask my husband to give me that much money again. I am hoping someone on here might know a vet that isn't quite as expensive and maybe has treated some chickens... if there is no one else, I will probably go back to the Aviary Vet, it could be my Birthday present this time...lol
sounds like she might have a cold , If so go to WalMart get some sinus tabs give one down the throat
usually one or two will do the trick, on the heavy breathing and not laying how old is she if still young she might know it is time to lay but her body is not quite ready i have had pullet do that for three or four days before they lay a egg And some time they get egg bound , and can't lay then there is a problem, and i have seen very few ever make it , sorry i can't be of any more help

Kim, how does her abdomen feel? Have you tried feeling very lightly around to see if you feel an egg?
It may be, as Pigeon said, that she is getting ready to lay and just isn't there yet.
What are you feeding them? I'm wondering if the sneezing isn't something to do with the dust in feed or something? Is that possible?
I sure hope she feels better soon.
I never thought about giving her a sinus tab... Pigeon, for my future knowledge, is it just like Tylenol cold and sinus tablets? Do I put the whole tablet or break it into pieces? Do I just throw it all the way to the back of the throat and hopefully she swallows? I love you guys, I learn sooooo much!
I ended up taking Ashes to Broadway Oaks Vet clinic, she saw a Dr Richardson. Prior to going to the clinic, Ashes was acting normal... normal breathing, no panting, just sneezing every once in a while. I guess the drive and the pet carrier stressed her out, and by the time we got there she could hardly catch her breath. She was panting and screeching like crazy. I'm sure the Vet thought I was the worst chicken-momma ever. He told me that she looked really bad and he thought she was close to not making it. I explained to him that 30 minutes earlier, she was running around eating raisins and beating up the cat...I think he thought I was dilusional. He gave her a shot of Baytril and is going to keep her overnight and try to feed her (she is a skinny little thing). I am praying like crazy she will be all better soon.
He did feel around in her abdomen and no egg. So maybe she is just not ready and is getting stressed out practicing and then her respiratory stuff kicks in??? Or, with my luck, SHE is a HE... she is almost 7 months old and no crow... and no egg... If she turns out to be a boy, I don't care, I am keeping her
EastTxChick, when Ashes first started sneezing last month, I switched from regular pine shavings to Aspen Shavings - I heard about them from Pat on the Chicken Whisperer show. Ashes kept sneezing but the dust decrease was significant... at least I can now breathe now when I am scooping poop!
Anyway, if anyone is looking for a chicken vet in San Antonio, I LOVED this place. Dr Richardson could not have been nicer and there are birds everywhere. The guy at the front office said he understands about chicken owners and how much we love our birds.
So everyone, please say a little prayer that my Ashes starts feeling better soon! She is very special to me and my husband's favorite !
