Texas

Everything I'm seeing with the use of DE people are just using a sprinkle or handful in whatever you are using for your litter for smell, bugs, mites, ect. Not to use it as the MAIN bedding. It's too fine a particle.

I'd like to talk the hubby into 3 birds cleanliness is key.

My plan (so far)...(subject to change).  ;)

After reading/looking at tons of info on raising chickens and coops on-line, I have come up with these ideas.  Tell me if I am off base on anything....

I want this coop.  There are a couple of others that I like, but I keep coming back to this one.  I want to enclose it in a large run area.  I'll post a photo of the place when my yard dries out more from all this rain we've had.  I plan on using hardware cloth to keep out as much as I can.  Not sure what I will put on the top, but I need something to keep the hawks/owls and squirrels out.

I have decided to use the DL method and FF along with sprouted feed.  I will have a tub for dust baths.

Not sure how to do a compost area.  Will have to read up on that.

I need to make a brooder.  I like the one on here made from a cabinet.

I need to figure out feeding still, like what types of dishes are best, amounts, and feeding the babies.  Heat for the winter...  Nesting boxes.

I'm sure there is much more I need to figure out and learn, but right now my head is starting to spin from information overload today.  Starting a 'notebook' for info on my computer.

Man!  There is a lot to learn!

Thats a nice looking coop :thumbsup sounds like your making the right plans-just remember no metal pans if your going to do the ff :) & welcome to the Texas thread

I've been out of touch for awhile, but I'm back now.  I was visiting kids and grandkids in Illinois over Halloween.  Since I've been back I've been occupied in copy editing a couple of novels written by my stepson who plans to self-publish on Amazon.  But now I'm done with that and will do a bit of catching up with backyard chickens.  Fortunately my chickens have been very patient with me the last week or so.

Welcome back :)

Thank you. :)  Some parts of Texas are very bike friendly, like Austin. Where I live cycling is a growing thing and most people are friendly.   My favourite roads are the county roads in my area and I haven't had any trouble riding them.  I love to ride the open country and see the ranches/farms.  With all this rain we have been having and the need to 'do life' I haven't been out since last Friday.  I am going nuts!

I'm just north of San Antonio in the Hill Country.  Our mayor wrote a delightful editorial piece on how bicyclists were endangering cars.  He was furious he couldn't pass them safely, felt they had no business interfering with motor vehicles so ended up yelling and screaming at them when they complained to him he had passed them very unsafely.  People forget that a bicycle is a vehicle and has a right to use the road.  I haven't been on my bicycle since my head injury in a car accident in January.  I haven't had good balance up until very recently, but I think I do now.  I'm looking forward to starting riding again, but am really afraid with all the anti-cycling sentiment.  My crazy husband feels the safest way to bike into work is down Hwy 281.  He claims it has a huge shoulder and people don't text while driving on a big highway, unlike on smaller roads.  He might have a point except a month or so ago some idiot in an SUV swerved off the road and hit him on the far right of the shoulder at about 65 mph.  Miraculously, his bike stayed upright and he only had ripped shorts, lots of bruising and scrapes.  It was so incredible, that the whole highway stopped to see if he was okay.  The idiot just took off--what is it about this place with so many hit and runs?????!!!  The witnesses took cell phone pictures of the car and texted them to 911, so the police  had a photo of the front of the car and the driver before they even arrived.  Haven't heard anything from the police--just incredibly thankful that he so narrowly escaped becoming road kill.  Yes, he still rides to work.

So glad your husband is ok  What kind of parrot is this? & how are your horses doing.......:)

I got paid today! Unfortunately, a portion of it is going to buy avian pox vaccine. I couldn't figure out what was going on with my little Cochin and my turkeys (I thought they were pecking each other or something), but now I know. I'm going to see if they sell it locally, but I will probably just order it online. What an expense. I really feel bad that I didn't notice this sooner. It probably would have been easier if I had noticed this sooner so they wouldn't be suffering through it.

Could use some help from the locals! Does anyone near San Antonio know where I might possibly get some wood pallets?

Hi Teri ... wcb,

We just about to complete all the required forms for visa petition. Once we submit, it will be 7 mos before they interview her. If everything goes right, she may be here late summer 2014, just in time to enjoy the orange leaves of autumn.

She made it home ok... kind of shaky drive in the wind. The power was out and the roof was leaking everywhere... even right at her bed. I guess she had to sleep in her swimsuit.

It gets hectic at work as we are heading to end of year. I will face several audits. Can't wait to x-mas to head home to see the bride and the guests.

My thoughts are with you and your wife right now. Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda heading straight for Vietnam. Many believe Haiyan has turned into the most powerful storm in history and made landfall in the Philippines with sustained wind speeds of 195 mph.
