Okay another "Rookie" question.......SOOOO if my hen is RIR and the Roo is RIR i "get it" the chicks will be RIR's, but if the hen is say BO and the Roo RIR...what are the chicks? How does that work, when you have a couple diff Roos running around....and hens of all flavors are all laying brownish eggs....how do you know what the hell ya just hatched???? Inquiring minds want to know Or maybe just me!:jumpy :jumpy :jumpy

Beautiful mutts that lay eggs?

Genetics is something I am just now learning about. The Olive Egger thread has a lot of genetic info, too. Then you will want OE's!!!

I am very proud of this photo. Photography is something that interest me. JungleExplorer helped explain some basics. Please excuse the logo in the middle...it's the only way I can protect the photos.

Then you'd just have "surprise!" mutts. But they'd probably still be pretty and lay good.

That is a really beautiful photo.

Very nice photo Tammy :)

I figured out what chickens to get today. I made a spreadsheet to help me decide. lol! I narrowed 11 down to 5. I went by the feed store tonight after work to talk to them about chicks and feed and stuff. They have some good feed that is all natural that I will use. They said they get their chicks form some place in NM. They also said it may be hard to get all the chicks I want at the same time. I may end up ordering them just so I can get them all at once instead of a few one week, another one the next week and so on.

I was looking at dishes and asked about nonmetal dishes because I was going to do fermented feed. The price on the guys face was priceless! He had no idea what I was talking about and his look told me that along with he thought I was nuts. lol! I'll go to Tractor Supply for dishes.

Oh, you say you want to know what I will be getting? OK ;)

Easter Egger - if she goes broody I am going to order Swedish Flower Hen eggs. :)
Welsummer
Black Australorp
Delaware
Black Copper Maran (or Black Maran - feed store doesn't get Black Coppers)

I have four out of the five birds you are ordering. I think you'll like them.

The Delaware is the only one I have not or do not have. What color egg does the Delaware lay?

You know, for only five hens you probably won't need anything larger than a dog bowl for feed, especially if you are doing the FF. I would get a good sized water'r for them that you can keep out of the sun (it makes them grow algae) and something that you don't have to fill several times a week.

That Australorp WILL go broody. If she does, consider buying some hatching eggs to put under her....MORE CHICKENS!!!!!!!!

I think I will like them too. :) And I have 6 more to try out in the future. ;) It is ok to one of each species, right? My mom thought it would better to have just one or two kinds. I told her they would be fine.

I'm going to get a 5 gallon bucket from Lowe's and put a nipple spout on it for them. I was reading someone's thread about a spout they got that mounts horizontally and does not drip. I need to find out what kind it is and where to get one.

I guess my EE will be hatching SFH's then. :) I will get my SFH hen that way. :)

I am so excited!

I need help building my coop and run. :/ I don't have power tools and with my 'gracefullness' it is best I don't use them. I want to keep all my fingers!

Delaware chickens lay medium to rich brown eggs.

Back in the day, it was easier for me to get forgiven than to get permission. But these days I just try to be a good citizen. And thanks again for you good wishes.
Teri, why don't you create a posting in the Trade/Sales section. Then copy the link in here for us to locate.
