Or my cat is planning on eating the coons!! He's so fat...I've had people stop in the road to see if he's a cat or a dog! LOVE my fat cat!!!

Hung I am so sorry to hear about the coon.  I did NOT send the coon your way!

Bisenuff, nice set up!  I hope your eggs hatch!

I am now battling a pack of dogs.  UGH!!  I have chased them away twice now.

Lisa :)

I would think dogs would be a bad problem to try and get rid off. If they have owners it can get dicey. They kill and don't even eat the chickens.I hope they go away.

Final incubator pics! 36 eggs went in 2/5 around noon. Temp holding steady between 99 and 100. Little cooler in the "back" by about 1 degree, so I rotate position every 2-3 days. Humidity is a little harder to control...I can get it where I want it, but keeping it there at night is difficult. It all evaporates. I have a dish with a rag in it...I also added a gel bottle thing from my husbands humidor and that seems to help some...I think I'll switch out the rag to a sponge...but when I had the sponge in there the humidity ran pretty high...maybe just part of sponge? I also took out the air plugs after reading a suggestion on another post...I think that's helping...
Good luck. Hoping for 36 peeps.

We got home about 12:30 am, so I had to wait until morning to see my babies. My sister took wonderful care of Mom and my chickens. I think she had fun with the hens. It was cold though.
Feels so good to be home. More nasty weather coming.
Everybody stay warm.

Hello I'm from the southern part of Texas, with only one modern game bantam, but I will be getting him some companions very soon!

Welcome from Rosenberg! 'Must get more chickens". Repeat that statement over and over and over...... :)

The owner is a slob. He has 5-6 dogs and lets them run all over the place. He doesn't care if they get hit by a car or not. We have talked to him about the fencing. His cows were jumping onto our property. He said, 'I will fix the fence'. We waited and waited and waited. We ended up fixing the fence.

The older girls have been attacked before. I lost half of my flock two years ago. It wasn't pretty what they did. You are right, the dogs just kill to kill. I love dogs, but .....

Lisa :)

If I were you.. we waited and waited and waited. We ended up fixing the cow. It happened in my cousin's house in 2005 in Vietnam. Near Chinese New Year so they brought home a young stag they raised at their farm a few miles away. They designated this stag for their year end praying mass. They tied the stag in front of the house. Later they heard the stag screaming.. there was a big rooster from the next door neighbor biting this stag. They chased the rooster away but he came back within 5 min. After the 3rd attack, they did not chase the rooster away any more, they caught him .. for the mass. And their stag was returned to their farm .. and lived happily ever after... until the owner got hungry one day.

Anyone know where I can find some laying Marans close to San Marcos?

I can only have two more chickens, and would like to just add two more layers straight into my exisiting group, instead of trying to raise two chicks (did that last year, while it did have its fun moments, I would rather pay extra for adults this time around.)

I give a lot of my extra eggs to friends/family, and love to include as much color variety as possible. (right now I have two easter eggers -who just started laying, two barred rocks, and two production reds. So, light brown, darker brown, and blue.)

Considering trying to find a white egg layer too, but I really want to get ahold of a Maran.

Please let me know if you know where I can find some! (or if you have any other suggestions for color variety!)

Officially started the coop today. I had a 8x6 dirt floor shed rough framed, but my Darling Wife said it was way too small. I pulled it apart and now I'm going with an 8ft x 12ft barn-style coop.

Laying out the floor...

Framing the floor using 4x4 skids and treated 2x6's...

Putting down the 3/4 inch tongue and groove flooring...

That's as far as I got today. The kids kept crawling around me like gnats. It also looks like I need to lower one corner. Good thing I took pics!!
You're making it look so easy! lol
I like that expression by the way..pretty sure that's how I felt with my kids yesterday...lol

Morning Texas! It's pea soup here in Houston. Hoping the cold will hold off til I can get to the grocery store after school. I'm not going to hold my breath though
Mmmm..split pea sounds AMAZING now

Nasty here in McKinney as well. Yesterday never panned out the way they said it would either. They seem to get the bad weather forecasts down, but not the nice days. I wish I could be paid to be wrong all the time.... Waiting for Thursday. :) After that the month looks awesome! Hope they are right. Time to start the spring planting.

Here is a list of good foods to grow for your chickens.

Speaking of good food for the weather.... Starting this tonight for tomorrow's supper. I I think I will make some bread to go with it too.

Stay warm today!
I keep waiting for it to warm up so I can start working in the yard. I'm starting to spaz out, so much to do: garden, coop, etc

Nancy Solinger just shared this funny conversation. I can't THINK of any better type of chocolates for Valentine's Day (and kudos to hubby for not only remembering the breed but also her name AND where she came from:

Hubby: Is there anything special you want for Valentine's Day.
Me: Grin weellll ( a short pause)
Hubby: I know that smile. You want a Chocolate Orpington like FED has ummm I think you said Truffle was her name.
Me: YES!!!YES!!!!
Hubby: O.K. I'll order your chicken you want- Monday morning. You look up the Chicken Scratch Poultry number.

I really didn't think he heard me when I talked to him about her. He sort of would look at her pictures while watching tv. you posted of her. I am super excited! We will be adding 4 more new pullets to our 2 hens and Mr. Roo in time. Thank-you FED!
That guy sounds dreamy..haha
The closest I got was a "Well maybe we can get a few more", but I'll take what I can get! lol
