Texas

So over the weekend, I moved my chicks out of the house and into the new brooder setup in the garage. It's really cold today and will be tomorrow as well. I checked the temperature and the thermometers are reading around 84 or so degrees. I have 2 heat lamps with the red 250w bulbs in the brooder. Is this going to affect the birds? FYI, they are 2.5 weeks old.

Hi everyone!

Please pray for the Dallas Firefighter who was knocked off the bridge at 408/I-20 a little while ago. Care Flight was unable to land, and he has been transported by ground. No word on his injuries, but they are no doubt life threatening.

Thanks!
Let us know if you hear anything! He's in my thoughts!

She's giving herself a dust bath. Yes, normal healthy chicken behavior. The first time I saw my chickens rolling around in deep, dry sand I thought they were dying. They were rolling around almost on their backs, slowly and thoroughly relishing it.

I can't believe this horrible weather we are having. I'm originally from Canada and am used to snow storms and bad driving conditions but I'll tell you, this winter has had more dangerous driving days (ice) where I am just north of San Antonio than I remember any winter having in Toronto. (Yes, my home town is the city with the ridiculous mayor that has made all the late-night comedy shows as well as national US news. Honest, Toronto is a really safe city although you wouldn't get that impression judging from the mayor's associates.)
Thought it might be that!! Thank you, she's a silly little thing.
My husband lived in Regina a little bit and now thinks he's an ice/snow driving expert..lol. I told him 3 years when he didn't even know how to drive yet doesn't count.

I think that' almost the right temp for them...I'm NOT a pro: Going on week 5 with my first batch of peeps. But I think it's 95 degrees for the first week, 90 the second week, 85 the third and so on. at 2.5 weeks that sounds about right..
I honestly didn't use a thermometer....I just go off behavior. If they huddle, I turn it up, if they crowd away from it or go off to the room without the lamp, I turn it down a few degrees. BUT, mine are inside so its easier. But it sounds like you're on target..I could be wrong

Quote: Cool, so even if it is dropping down to 75-80 in the middle of the night they should still be okay if they huddle together under the lights. Excellent!

BTW...I believe my Silver Laced Wyandottes are direct descendents of the Veloci-Raptor. They are naughty little birds that like to attack my hand everytime I reach in the brooder.

ALL of mine do that! lol
I stay positive and choose to believe they're just so excited to greet me!
My favorite BO (..that sounds bad, but favorites happen!) bit my wrist so hard last night that I yelped and woke up my 1 year old...oops! She was going for a freckle....

I bet it tastes no better than Popeyes :) Is this what you want for your Valentine ? As you know I have the 1 thousand dollar bill (ref. TexasLisa), this will be just 5 bills for me, should not be a big deal.

Toe Leaves: I have 3 very sweet hens. Never peck, BUT...as I discovered on the one warm day we had recently, green toe nail polish looks like yummy leaves to chickens!! They WILL peck at it! doesn't hurt, but was surprising!

Wow, beautiful bird! It costs twice as much as my first car. LOL
Get a breeding pair and then sell a couple of pairs yourself to re-coop the money.
My husband would disown me if I spent $5k on a pair of chickens. Lol
Although if I had more land I would definitely consider it. And more money of course...
Semester of college or a Swedish Black pair...
Sorry kids! lol
