Well, I apparently I have reinjured an arm/elbow tear from last August. Left arm is useless. All I got done today was installation of the top plates to tie all the walls together and I cut the rafters for the roof. I could not run the screw gun because of my arm so I gave up. Went into San Antonio and picked up a new helper...


Not really a quality tool, but it should help me get the job done.

Brought home two hens today. A Rhode island Red (use the term loosely, as it is a hatchery stock, which usually means production red) and another welsummer. Everyone is in for the night and no major blowups. They came from the same flock as my other two I got six weeks ago. Excited for up to 4 eggs a day.

gran how dark are your wellsummer eggs? i found a breeder in northern ar that sells eggs and i am thinking about adding some to my flock. of course i will be forced to raise a few if i have them anyway

The eggs are decently dark - much darker than a typical "brown" egg, but not as dark as a marans - definitely a deep brown/ reddish "terra cotta" brown - really nice. Of course, one of mine is now laying lighter eggs, not sure why....maybe she needs more time after taking off some of the winter.

I love Naked Necks - I wish my family did. They were not impressed with the photos I showed them. Your NN looks beautiful - the skin looks almost peach colored.

The brown color is a pigment that is painted on the egg at the very end. The paint layer gets thinner the more eggs they lay, even with Marans. That's true with the blue eggs, too. The blue pigment is not a layer on top of the egg, but is all through the shell.

I did miss you guys! All things are well here. The NNs and JGs are getting very big! 5 months old already. Here are my two roosters; my NN Hawkeye, and my JG Cogburn. Taken about a month ago, at 4 months old.

All these posts and pics of lovely birds are giving me the chills. Chicken fever, anyone?

I already have about 16 hens, not including the 2 young pullets I bought and the 3 remaining Wyandotte females I have. I'll probably have room for 3 more females once I get rid of those three pesky roosters. That way, Blind George and Nameless EE have the perfect amount of lady friends.

I need to learn about limits....but I don't imagine it would be very fun, haha!

Thank you Lisa!  We are getting ready to build three new run/coops; I for quail, one for Brahmas and one for EEs.  

Brownie, that little mystery chick that came with the NNs turned out to be a Brown Leghorn.

I have a brown leghorn named Brownie too. I got her as a chick. I was told she was a golden lace Wyandotte. Showed her pic here on BYC and was quickly corrected. She layes huge white eggs.
