Time to touch base. I haven't been active on BYC lately because we've been out of town just enough that I got out of the habit of checking in daily. But I'm back to all things chicken. Just finished my powerpoint presentation on "Backyard Chickens" for the BCS Home & Garden Expo for Saturday & Sunday. Here's the website: http://www.homeexpobcs.com/seminars/
Welcome back Teri!!

Welcome from Rosenberg!

Another 6:00 a.m. post office run this morning, this time to pick up the two blue bantam Cochins I have been trying to get shipped for the past month. It was too cold and stormy in New York, where they are from, to risk shipping them. I don't know how old they are, but I would guess around 6 or 7 months. They are a nicer clearer blue than the pictures show, and of course, they are pretty dirty after two days in a little box.

Nice, nice, nice!! I hope they settle in just fine.

Lisa :)

For the Houston Area folks - I was just at Livengood Feed at SH 249 & 2920 in Tomball, TX and they have 2 week and 1 week old Orps, Aust Orps, EEs, RIRs, Red Sex Links and BRs in. All Pullets and lots of em.

Welcome back and that's a great power point

It's the summer I'm really worried about.  I'm already asking Cochin people what they do.  One person brings the birds in the house!  Yikes!

My BOs first Summer I had their coop/tractor in full sun. It was hot when they went in to lay. So I froze a gallon jug of water and put it in the coop, propped open the door and nesting box lid and it helped. But I only had 4 hens to worry about and they free ranged the rest of the day. My girl's have never played in water, but I hear some people use kiddie pools. I am really glad they show no interest because I have a pool and would be afraid one would jump in and drown. They waddle right across the pool deck and don't seem to care one bit about the pool.

There are lots of ideas on here for keeping birds cool. I've read other sites too. Ice bottles, misters, water pans, shade cloth.... Do you get the strings of 100*+ days there like we do up here in the DFW area?

This makes me want to go to the feed store.... Must resist!

As I was cycling today (outside!!!!) I was running through ideas for keeping chickens. I almost stopped in to talk with a guy I have talked with on the phone about chicken keeping. I ride right by his house. He has a big flock of chickens that get to free range on 13 acres. I wish I could have 13 acres.... Maybe someday I will win the lottery. I probably should buy a ticket. I hear the odds are about the same whether you buy a ticket or not. ;) There is a company that I ride by that has tons of pallets stacked up. I should stop in and see if I could have some. I never did get the pallets from the guy who was going to deliver them to me before the ice storm hit. I also want to figure out how I could get this old shed that is on some land that they moved the house off of a few months ago. I don't think they want the shed. I could turn it into a chicken coop. Maybe I can put a note on it....
