~~Oh! Totally had a question. I've had to add the 2 week silkie chicks to my 6 weekers. They generally get along fine, but 2 of the pullets seem to go out of their way to be mean. To the point where the silkies stay in the same corner, huddled up to stay out of anyone's notice, for really long periods of time (or I think so..for a chick). Are they going to get a break soon? I know pecking order and all, but I didn't think it was this discriminate

Can you put up a wire wall between them?

Yea!! I have 4 walls! Now to build the doors and shutters and then I can paint. Suggested color scheme anyone??

Surprise us. I would go with whatever (best paint) is in the sale bin. A good grade of paint will save repainting as soon.

I can't wait, we're starting the coop next week.
I love my girls but I'm ready for them to be out of the house! lol
Then I can keep the little ones inside a little longer.
I think I keep getting weird chickens..lol. They all are crazy daredevils.
I had to combine them because the container my 2 silkies were in, was apparently not enough for "Little Blue".
She's fluttered out twice. I woke up last night, heard peeping, and found her walking around in my kitchen...
She's TEENY! how do they do that....lol

Anyone near Austin....what is your successful lockdown humidity level? I'm so nervous that I'm second guessing everything....It's been mostly between 62-64, but there have been a few spikes to 68 after I add water...then I open a vent hole to lower a percent at a time slowly...worried thats not a good thing to do?

That is a fine thing to do, I have found that it is better to have lower humidity than higher here in Austin. The best results I have had are a "dry hatch", no water added during the first part, then bumping it up to 65% during lock down. Now, I have only hatched in the spring when humidity is high, not in summer when low. Best of luck

You're gonna have problems with putting such small chicks in with these larger ones. You really need to make an area that only the little babies can get into, so that they are not kept away from food and water - otherwise you run a real risk of them dying from dehydration and starvation. When I have to put younger ones in with the older ones, I make a creep feeder. The easiest one was made using pallet that had spaces large enough for the smaller/younger birds to go through but the bigger birds could not get into. That way, the smaller ones had a safe place behind the bars, along with their own food and water in there. You can put them in a small cage with food and water inside the larger area where all of them are at, so they still have the exposure to each other, but the Silkies are safe. Be creative with your situation, but I highly recommend that you get those littlest ones a safe place to retreat to, complete with their own food/water ASAP.

Lots to catch up on after not being on pretty much all weekend.

I walked Sasha around the neighbourhood yesterday afternoon and found more neighbours with chickens.  They had a low (under 3 feet low) picket fence covered with chicken wire around the back yard with a mix of birds.  I could actually name the kinds now!  One was outside the fence and Sasha was really interested in her.  The hen was quite frustrated she couldn't get back in the fence and finally flew over.  That was the first time I saw a chicken fly.  I am not so worried about my chickens getting out now. This hen was a white leghorn and just barely made it over the fence back into the yard. I want to go back and talk to them about their coop and set up. It was cute and looked easy to build.

I also met a neighbor that is remodeling his house himself so I might be able to ask him for some help with my coop.  He needs to finish his project first though. His house was built in 1920.  I love those old homes with their big porches....

Rain in the forecast this week.  I sure do hope we get it.  It has been really dry here this winter. The lakes are really low. I hope we don't get into stage 4 water restrictions. 

Ms Jellybean how many chickens are you needing a coop for and about what size coop would you be looking to get ? Are you needing a run to keep them all inside a pen or are you letting them out in the day to free range ?
