Texas

Hi Folks...Just read a good piece in my chicken book. Pull up clumps of grass roots and all. Of course no chemicals on it. Put them in the brooder with your chicks. They will nibble small bits of the grass and peck the dirt (chick size grit). But the main benefit is that if you are going to let your chickens range this will expose them to what the will find on the ground. It will help them build natural immunity. Cut grass is not good because them can try to swallow the whole thing and it get stuck. Youcan also use clumps of weeds if you know what they are. Chick weed is a good one. Magppie

Hi ChickensForTherapy, yessssss, my Avatar is Ms.KornKorn, that was some time in October, her coop was one of those igloo shaped dog houses that I had in one of those 2-man dome shaped tents....however, she still would come in at night....she's a mama's girl...she used to lay 1-2 eggs everyday. The first time I saw that she was eating her own eggs I was MORTIFIED, read up and found out that they do that....she is her own snack machine!!

I never new they could lay more than one egg in a day. Oh, maybe one of the neighbor hens layed one in her nest. They like to add to a clutch of eggs.
You are so creative in your coop ideas. You would love the Funky Chicken Coop Tours. I love the part about MsKornkorn learning how to get in through the window by watching the cats. And people say chickens aren't smart.

So here are pictures of what we are going to turn into my coop.

As you can see we have a lot to do to critter proof and get it ready. I have tin I am burying all around inside the coop. Going to put it down half the wt of the tin. It's a good thing my husband is very smart and creative when it comes to this kind if stuff. Because we have a lot of work to do.

ooooops!!!! HENSfortherapy it is....jeeejeje

I think it may also be that I wouldn't check for eggs everyday and every so often i'd do an igloo check and there'd be one there, so it may have been one from the previous day, the neighbor chickens disappeared sometime in December, that's one of the reasons I decided to get Ms. KornKorn a flock of her own. Went and checked on the babies a little while ago and they're having a blast!! Ms. KornKorn hasn't layed any eggs in a while....

Dear Texas Forum,
I want to apologize to all of you for making you so Itchy.

I am ashamed to say that with this winter being so cold and so many health issues i was not at all vigilant about checking on the ladies for issues.

They got clean bedding fresh food and water but spent most of the time in the run and packed so much of the dirt I am sure now that they were not able to bathe properly. ( I thought they only used the dust bath to cool down like pigs and mud.)

I will be way more vigilant in the future and will make sure they have proper poultry bath houses from now on.

I want you all to know that if not for this Texas forum and the natural chicken one I would still be wondering instead of acting!

So as I am sorry for making you scratch

I am VERY GRATEFUL for the results.

Thanks so much

:) I started to read the links that were posted last night before going to bed and then stopped myself. I knew no good would come of it! Thanks for all the info posted here last night.

They all lived through the night. Whew!
:)

It has been a while since I've been here. The family and I went on a primitive camping trip for spring break at Sam Houston National Forest. Loads of fun.

We had just been given a baby chick and had to take it with us so that it would live. That was an experience and we got weird looks from other campers with our three large breed dogs and baby chicken in tow.

Since we had lost two pullets previously-they got crushed during a wind storm- i decided to get two more to replace them R-I-Rs to keep the other baby chick company. She seems to get lonely by herself. Also, we added rabbits. Not sure exactly what they are but I think they are Rex rabbits.

I have a question about the chicks. The older pullets (currently 3 months old) do not accept the baby chicken. They treat it like food. So for now all the chicks live in the house brooder. Will they be accepted when they are bigger or will this always be a problem?

Thanks, I am learning so your help is greatly appreciated.
That is funny! I used to bring my cat camping when I was little. We got weird looks for that too.

The chicks will eventually be accepted by the older chickens. You need to put them in side by side runs so they can get to know each other through a fence first.

Chicken math?? Ok, well I am an educated person but is chicken math about adding more chickens to your flock or counting them to make sure they are all there?? I'm guessing it's the adding more but I've got this condition where I have to count everybody every time I go out and at night when I lock them up to make sure all are accounted for.
Chicken math = adding more chickens.

+1, except I am in McKinney. :)

  1. This is chickweed it has little white flowers and it's probably growing in everyones yard right now
I just pulled some of this today and threw it away. I should have saved it for my new babies that will be here SOON!!!!

I worked in the yard today for about 6 hours. That included a trip to Calloways too. My back bed is coming along nicely. :) I just need a couple more shrubs and more flowers.

It went from this...

To this....

There were several changes in between. :) The back yard is looking so much better. I need to get better photos when the sun is out.
We have been here a 1.5 years now. Still a lot to be done.

It never did rain today like it was supposed to. I hope we get some soon.

My garden is sprouting! I'm going to plant the warm season veggies next weekend. Somehow I ended up with 6 tomato plants. My garden will hold 4 of them. The other 2 will go into my earth box. :)

I need to make supper and finish cleaning the house now...
