Texas

I am new to byc but I am in gustine texas I am located about 35 miles from stephenville texas and about a hour in a half from fort worth north and a hour and half from temple east. I have 18 american game chickens and right now I am incubating about 15 new babies and I cant wait for them to hatch

Hello and welcome to BYC

Okay, so I did it. I moved them from the brooder in the garage to the coop.

When they first got in there they stayed huddled together like the boogey monster was going to jump out at any minute.

I took the advice of one of the members on here and purchased the 3 gallon metal hanging feeder from TSC. The top was open, so I also bought a large funnel to serve as a top and also keep the birds from sitting up there and pooping in the feed. I hung it with some barbless fence wire.

Here is a shot of the PVC\Chicken nipple auto-watering system. There is a black hose that goes out to the right that you can barely see. It connects to a 65 gallon rainwater barrel. I started filling the barrel with water and found a pin hole about halfway up. Not sure if I should try to fix it or return it and try another one. I'm thinking return, but danggit Sam's Club is like 28 miles away!
I concerned about the chickens figuring out how to use the chicken nipples. I put them in the coop around 5pm and still have not seen one bird try the waterer.

Yes....this is me checking on them every 30 minutes or so. First night without a night light and outside on their own!!! I'm kinda a nervous wreck, LOL!
Yaaaaaay!!! It like it! I bet they like it more

Dear Texas Forum,
I want to apologize to all of you for making you so Itchy.

I am ashamed to say that with this winter being so cold and so many health issues i was not at all vigilant about checking on the ladies for issues.

They got clean bedding fresh food and water but spent most of the time in the run and packed so much of the dirt I am sure now that they were not able to bathe properly. ( I thought they only used the dust bath to cool down like pigs and mud.)

I will be way more vigilant in the future and will make sure they have proper poultry bath houses from now on.

I want you all to know that if not for this Texas forum and the natural chicken one I would still be wondering instead of acting!

So as I am sorry for making you scratch

I am VERY GRATEFUL for the results.

Thanks so much
Jodi

Like everyone said, it was helpful! lol
I had never thought to check. AND, they've already packed down the dirt in their run, I need to get them a dust bath! If you hadn't brought up mites, I wouldn't have remembered

I have 6 barred rock and 1 rir. And yes the bluebonnets and Indian paint brushes are starting to pop up everywhere!
Indian Paintbrushes are my favorite! :)

Welcome!!!
I have 5 barred rocks and 15 RIR! I love them. But in the short time I have been on here I have found a number of other chicks I want! Lol
Story of my life....lol
I'm becoming a chicken junkie!

This is Lilly enjoying a bit of a jump on this cloudy Sat morning.

This is Peter who has, once again, escaped his living quarters. You may not be able to tell but that's his house in the background. Smallish house, it's just for the rainy days and to get out of the sun, and nice sized run. He's figured out how to unhitch the fence from the nail on the wood fence. Today's project...
What breed is Lily?? She's pretty...

One of our Easter Eggers from Cackle is getting so pretty, I just wanted to share! I don't know how we've missed it, its like overnight she just blossomed.

I wish I could tell from pictures which chick she was but they all look so similar its so hard to tell!
She looks like the opposite of the EE roo I had!
He was white with black/tan/red speckles. Lol

You know...I do have an empty brooder now..
Now that the thought is there, It's going to stay. Lol
  1. This is chickweed it has little white flowers and it's probably growing in everyones yard right now
I have a ton of this, I've been pulling it for my girls. Lol.
Although they shunned it in favor of watermelon today.
Can those girls put away some watermelon......

I worked in the yard today for about 6 hours. That included a trip to Calloways too. My back bed is coming along nicely. :) I just need a couple more shrubs and more flowers.

It went from this...

To this....

There were several changes in between. :) The back yard is looking so much better. I need to get better photos when the sun is out.
We have been here a 1.5 years now. Still a lot to be done.

It never did rain today like it was supposed to. I hope we get some soon.

My garden is sprouting! I'm going to plant the warm season veggies next weekend. Somehow I ended up with 6 tomato plants. My garden will hold 4 of them. The other 2 will go into my earth box. :)

I need to make supper and finish cleaning the house now...
Looks great!!! We got some mist, does that count?

I know this is off subject but it's Prom night here in Quitman and I had to show off my oldest boy who graduated last year and his girlfriend/future wife. I pray all have a happy and safe night.
Awwww, they look great!

Nothing exciting on my end. We passed off Pan to a nice guy in Ennis on Wednesday. I can't say I miss the crowing, but I never minded it either.
Just work, kids, and car shopping!
Oh! and I got to chase around my BR Freya because she refused to go in. I think I spent 15 minutes following her around the yard.

My Buff Silkie's comb is developing pretty well, while my white Silkie has ZIP...lol. Just a little bald spot where the comb should go. Still WAY to early to sex them

Oh well!

I know what you mean. Every day I Look at mine hoping to see signs to direct me towards their sex. I got some really good tips the other day on sexing RIR and based on that I have two roos. I was hoping to have at least one so I am excited. I'm 100% sure on one of them and the other one I am 85% so another week should help sure that up for me. Its exciting

Update...All 10 babies still fine. See signs of tiny wing feathers on some. Still no chick from my bantam momma. Have checked three times today. My girls are so noisy though I couldn't hear peeping anyway. Will check one more time tonight. If not, maybe there will be a fuzzy surprise by the time we get home from church tomorrow. The suspense is killing me!!!

I was really lucky at sexing everyone else! Lol.
But Silkies are notoriously hard until they're older (there's a day-old trick but I got these at about a week).
This site is SO helpful when it comes to sexing

I have 3 birds that hatched Nov 1st. Still don't know what sex they are. One has a nice comb and looks like a small version of the rest of the PRs but with bright yellow legs. The other two have nothing on their heads but a red patch and red cheek patches. One is PR colored the other is white with black flecks coming in the tail. I'll get some pics tomorrow. Maybe someone can help.
