We have Red Tailed hawks, that was what took down one of my full grown game hens

Red tails are really big. A red shouldered is smaller. Still a big bird though!

I could just put fishing line up all over the yard.....

Just how worried do I need to be about day time predators for full size chickens?  I have neighbours that let theirs out all day and they have similar fences (or shorter) to mine and the hens are all over their yards.

If I don't need to worry about making them a big run for the day time I can build my big coop only.  It is the big run that was going to prevent me from getting chickens since I couldn't get all the wire.  If I get the chickens as planned I can still get the big chicks and only need to buy a little more to build the coop.

Could I still use the plastic fencing to make a run for the big hens?  The coop will be secured with hardware cloth.

if I was you I would just build the large coop. It's going to be months before they are big enough to go out side in the yard by them selfs. I would put up fishing line to start with and then build the pen as you can.

We added a new group to our small flock! So excited!!! A HUGE thank you to Curtis Hale. :D We now have 4 Cream Legbar pullets and a cockerel. I can't wait for our first blue egg! I tried to get a picture of each girl but one was a little camera shy and one loved it. Its a little picture heavy so I made them small but you can click on them to make them larger.
Nice looking flock.I want one of my girls to go broody so I can get chicks from him.

I am thinking it makes more sense to put my money into the coop I want and get the bigger chickens. Just not as many. Same output money wise and I will get better layers.
I can get the chicks next week I think.

I am still getting the same message. I can get onto Craigslist without any problem. Weird. Thanks for trying to help!

Lisa :)
Lisa, what browser are you using? I tried the link in Chrome and it wouldn't work. It does in Safari though.

A CHICK! Our very first hatch! So tiny! It must have hatched over night, it's already dry. Ran back to the house to get the camera and when I got back it was already tucked back up under Belle and I didn't want to disturb her. I'll get a pic when we go back down later. I heard peeping but thought is was coming from the 10 in the barn. Only saw it because momma got up when I opened the door to let everybody out. Gonna set a bowl of food right in front of her so she can eat.

Good day folks...Thank you all for the help with my chick. Looks ok today. Yes, I added ASV to their water yesterday. I've been making homemade electrolyte with sugar salt and baking soda. Recipe from my chicken book. I added the vinegar to the mix yesterday when I made a fresh batch. I will move the light up some. They were all under the light at 5:30 this morning.

Sorry I didn't respond last evening. Was gonna watch a little TV and have some tea, next thing I know my dogs are waking me up at 5:30 needing out. Was a long day yesterday. Of course i checked on my "kids" I was outside anyway.

Sorry you aren't getting your checks today Ms Jellybean. What you have built for them looks great. You'll get them soon, better to have them stronger when you get them than to risk loosing any after you gat them.
Have a great day Y'all Magpie

Can a red shouldered hawk take a full grown chicken? That is what I have by me.
I have red shoulder hawks in the area as well. I don't think they are big enough to try a grown chicken. They have so far never even tried to bother my girls. They don't like to get down in the trees and most of where my gang ranges is in the woods. There is still open area too but the hawks fly over up high and seem to pay no attention to the chickens. I would not trust them not to take a chick or pullet though. Their pen will be covered.
