Red tails are really big. A red shouldered is smaller. Still a big bird though!
I could just put fishing line up all over the yard.....

Just how worried do I need to be about day time predators for full size chickens? I have neighbours that let theirs out all day and they have similar fences (or shorter) to mine and the hens are all over their yards.
If I don't need to worry about making them a big run for the day time I can build my big coop only. It is the big run that was going to prevent me from getting chickens since I couldn't get all the wire. If I get the chickens as planned I can still get the big chicks and only need to buy a little more to build the coop.
Could I still use the plastic fencing to make a run for the big hens? The coop will be secured with hardware cloth.
Nice looking flock.I want one of my girls to go broody so I can get chicks from him.We added a new group to our small flock! So excited!!! A HUGE thank you to Curtis Hale.We now have 4 Cream Legbar pullets and a cockerel. I can't wait for our first blue egg! I tried to get a picture of each girl but one was a little camera shy and one loved it. Its a little picture heavy so I made them small but you can click on them to make them larger.

I am thinking it makes more sense to put my money into the coop I want and get the bigger chickens. Just not as many. Same output money wise and I will get better layers.if I was you I would just build the large coop. It's going to be months before they are big enough to go out side in the yard by them selfs. I would put up fishing line to start with and then build the pen as you can.
Lisa, what browser are you using? I tried the link in Chrome and it wouldn't work. It does in Safari though.I am still getting the same message. I can get onto Craigslist without any problem. Weird. Thanks for trying to help!

I have red shoulder hawks in the area as well. I don't think they are big enough to try a grown chicken. They have so far never even tried to bother my girls. They don't like to get down in the trees and most of where my gang ranges is in the woods. There is still open area too but the hawks fly over up high and seem to pay no attention to the chickens. I would not trust them not to take a chick or pullet though. Their pen will be covered. Can a red shouldered hawk take a full grown chicken? That is what I have by me.
