Looking up ideas for coops...

I hadn't thought about turning furniture into a coop, but these people did.
That's what I did. I took a dresser and turned it upside down, screwed it to a wooden pallet, took the drawers out and doors off and then constructed a roof from salvaged wood slats. I had to buy 2x4's but total cost to me was less than $20. I'll try to post a picture in a little bit.

Permethrin is the same drug they use on kids with head lice. I think all the insecticides work as a neuro toxin. They generally over excite the nervous system, I believe.

I don't know what the withdrawal is for Permethrin--the label on the Permectrin II that I used to dip my new birds that had evidence of lice eggs and to spray premises only lists a withdrawal of five days for swine. No withdrawal is mentioned for poultry or cattle.

I like Elector as it can be used on laying hens and is very, very effective.

Where do you buy this>?

I don't use my fence as part of my coops since the outside predators will smell them and like to dig through. Since you don't live next to a wooded area, maybe this problem is not obvious.

Okay, so the back story. I quit a very good job as a government agent and decided to go back to school to complete my nursing degree. When I did this my wife (knowing my intent to homestead) told me that I could raise animals if I didn't spend a lot of money. So, I looked for wood and stuff to build a coop next to our detached garage. I live on the Mexican border and it gets very hot down here, hence the open air design on the coop itself. Just for the chickens I ended up spending close to $75 for our setup- including hay, netting, chicken wire and some 2x4's.

Up close of the actual coop. A dresser that I found. Took off the doors and took out the drawers. Turned it upside down and screwed it to a wooden pallet. Spray painted it to make it tactical.

The oldest girls I have. We started with 8 but lost 3.

The frame cost less than $15 and the roofing was salvaged from a house down the street.

Here are the replacements. The black one (Derk) was given to us and this past weekend I picked up two more reds so Derk wouldn't be so lonely. She makes a great big sis to the tiny ones.

Added two rabbits to the farm. Not sure what they are, maybe someone can help me identify? I think that they might be Rex rabbits.

Very cool!

How long does that usually last you?

Do you spray with a schedule?

This was recommended to me by a vet who breeds and exhibits Cochins. She was really impressed with how well it worked. I will be treating every two weeks for two or three treatments. I used it the night after they were exhibited at a poultry show. I'll repeat again two weeks later.

I don't think I'll ever run out of product from that bottle. It only takes 4.5cc make up a gallon of solution.
