Ok so my question for the zip ties is how hard is it to get them off of them when it is time? Where do you get the colored zip ties?  The permanent leg bands, are those the spiral ones.... I think that is what I saw?

Colored zip ties I get at TSC. There's always a giant bucket of them around hardware. But you can get them anywhere, really. i just use wire snips, cut and replace as necessary with growth.

Leg bands, and a leg band applicator, can be purchased online. They come prenumbered and are available in whatever quantity over 25 you want. The tool is like $20... I got my starters from farmer Johns online store.

Identification / Leg Bands

Does anyone use these or have a special way to mark your flock? I have had a couple of different times I would have liked to noted a certain chick to watch something but I couldn't figure out away at that time. I have been looking at the bands and the zip ties but I am not really sure how the zip ties would work.

Do ya'll have any good ideas for advice?

Have you looked into either of these bands?

Thank you!

I read some where that some put nail polish on a toe but I didn't like that idea.
I don't like the idea of zip ties because chicks seem to grow overnight (like kids do) and they could be fine one day and too tight the next.

I am getting a roo in my BCM's shipment and I am having his toe painted so I can tell him apart.

What ever you use, don't use red. They will peck at it.

That was my concern as well on the zip ties do I was hoping to get a lot of input to see how it works for others! I'm still undecided. Lol

ClovisMan: Great job on the nipple waterer tutorial! I only have ducks so I can't really use one of those, but I will save it in case I ever do get chickens.

Interestingly (or not) my job is writing reports every week on PVC resin and PVC pipe. My friends at Charlotte Pipe will be very glad to see you using their products! For all of you contemplating buying some PVC in the next few months, prices will be rising...

If you put the zip ties (aka cable ties) on so that they are loose around the leg but don't slip off over the toes, then it is easy to cut them off and reapply as they grow.

We use zip ties for certain things. Otherwise as they are growing, we have various sizes of colored split rings so we can identify birds as individuals. But as with the zip ties, we have to monitor them and periodically change the split rings to larger sizes. But this isn't bad since it gets them accustomed to being handled. Once they are adults, we put on permanent colored aluminum bands with numbers imprinted on them, using a different color for each year hatched.
