Texas

That was my concern as well on the zip ties do I was hoping to get a lot of input to see how it works for others! I'm still undecided. Lol
Thanks for asking about this. I have been wanting to band some of mine so I can tell which ones are the good layers. Never thought of zip ties. We use them for all kinds of stuff. My girls are grown so once they are on they would be permanent. I think I like the spiral ones, they are small and wouldn't get as much dirt under them. May try the zip ties first. I have a bunch of the small ones in colors and they are cheap. I really only need about a dozen.

Prices will be rising for three reasons. PVC is made of two raw materials in about equal proportions, ethylene and chlorine. They are made into VCM, which is then made into PVC. There was a big fire at a major VCM plant a few months ago, and it will be down at least until the end of April, meaning less product to make PVC

Prices for ethylene have been rising because of planned and unplanned downtime at the plants that make it, and because the major pipeline that brings ethylene from Texas to Louisiana has been down for months and won't be back up until June at the earliest. That means less ethylene to make PVC.

The third reason is tight supply of PVC itself due to planned and unplanned downtime at PVC plants in Texas and Louisiana over the past few months.

So, the basic rules of supply and demand are pushing up prices for PVC, which means the companies that use it to make pipe are also trying to raise their prices. So far they have had limited success because the very cold winter has hampered demand for pipe. They hope that demand will rise as the weather warms across the country in April, allowing them to push their prices up enough to recoup the 9 cents per pound in price increases they have taken in PVC resin so far this year.

I hope that explains it!

ClovisMan: Great job on the nipple waterer tutorial! I only have ducks so I can't really use one of those, but I will save it in case I ever do get chickens.

Interestingly (or not) my job is writing reports every week on PVC resin and PVC pipe. My friends at Charlotte Pipe will be very glad to see you using their products! For all of you contemplating buying some PVC in the next few months, prices will be rising...
Not good news...why the increase in price. We are going to put in new water lines from our well to our houses and out buildings. Most of our lines are at least 20 yrs old and some are black pipe so been getting alot of leaks lately. Will require several hundred feet of new pipe...ugh.

You will also need some teflon pipe tape and your favorite PVC glue. I use the new all-in-one spray stuff.

This is the Female Hose Adapter.

This is the 1 inch to 3/4 Female Reducing Adapter.

The 1 inch cap end.

The Solway Water Nipple.

Now take a marker and mark your holes on the 1 inch pipe. I put them at 3-8-13-18. I also take advantage of the print to make sure they are straight. :)

Next drill pilot holes over your marks. I use a small 1/8 drill bit for this.

Next drill the holes out to 3/8.

Clean the holes up with a rasp, file, or in my case a pocket knife. Also blow/clean out all the shavings from the PVC.

Now you are ready to glue the cap on one end and the female threaded adapter on the other.

Let the glue dry. The spray sets up pretty good in about 10 minutes. Put teflon tape on the thread of the hose adapter and thread into the female adapter.

Thread the chicken nipples into the holes on the PVC. Make sure your thread all the way flush or they will leak.

Here it is when its done.

Now just connect it to your favorite watersource. Mine happens to be a rain barrel, but you can also connect it directly to your water hose if you add a low pressure valve to your hose bib.

You should add this to the article contest.

I agree Clovisman.

Looks like we have rain/thunderstorms predicted for today.I'm hoping to get some more kilz painted on today. I'm wanting to paint the exterior this weekend. I think I'm going with barn red, to match the shed we have out by the barn.

I'm also debating on starting on some more coops in the barn, or just waiting to see if I really like chicken keeping. What do ya'll think? Should I wait and see?

I know I want to get some colored Orps or more Wyandottes. So far, those are my two favorite breeds out of the chicks I have now. I really like how the Legbars look. Those of you that have them, how are their temperaments? I don't have to have "in your lap" chickens, but I do have a 4 yr old granddaughter who is here almost daily, so I don't want anything really wild.

Just a few things to ponder today. :)
