Most of you don't like using chemicals on your chickens, neither do I, but here is a link that might help you folks dealing with mites and other skin pests, when other things haven't worked.

Eggcessive gave me this link when asking about chick feet but it is a wealth of other info as well. For you folks that are dealing with mites, you can use camphophenic applied to the legs. You can also use Frontline, the same stuff you use for fleas on dogs and cats. It treats chicken mites and fowl mites too. It is sold as Pet Armor at Wally world. Same med Fipronil. Been using it for years on my animals with no ill effects. Just buy the largest vials and use accordingly...here is the link to verify what I said and the application amounts for your birds and any precautions you should take...Magpie https://sites.google.com/a/poultrypedia.com/poultrypedia/poultry-podiatry

Let the teens out to play in the mud... And play in the mud they did! You would think these boys haven't seen dort in their entire lives. Not just a few days.. LOL! Also, over night I went from one suspected roo to six definite cockerals. They're starting to crow back at Lyle...

Looking for ideas. What do you do when you leave town? Do you have a neighbor care for your chickens, do you hire somebody, do you avoid leaving so that you can care for your chickens?

Now that I've decided to have our urban farm I am wondering what to do for extended stays away from home (i.e. family vacations out of town). Could I please learn from your experience?
We are lucky. We have a family that lives down the road from us. Their boys come up twice a day to take care of my chickens.

Thanks for the article. I spray them year round when I catch them. I found Malathion mixed with water work efefctively. My birds are in cages so the ground is not loose and this problem returns from time to time, especially when it rains a few days then the ground changes from wet to hard quickly.

There is a thread on here called Map of potential Chicken Sitters and it has places where people live that will sit for you. Check it out.
I rarely go anywhere but when I do leave I pay someone to come over. Usually a neighbor or friend.

Hey yall! I'm in Magnolia Texas and don't remember if I've ever posted here or not! LOL -- that's my oldtimer's showing!

I have a Banty hen flock: 1 Dark Brahma (Shy), 1 Blue Silkie (Smokey), 1 lighter gray Silkie (Bandit), & 2 Lavender Ameraucanas, as yet unnamed. I also have 2 10-day old Lavender Ameraucana chicks (as yet unnamed AND unsexed).

Right now I'm getting only 1 egg per day from "someone" (I think it's Shy) but NOT from the Ameraucanas. Hope they pick up soon!!

I am not so sure that Malathion is working for you since you seem to have three different parasites at the moment. Malathion is not something that can be applied directly to the bird. several external parasites live on the birds, so spraying the cages won't deal with them.
