Agreed!

GOOD MORNING ALL
HOPING FOR A MUCH NICER DAY TODAY!

Yesterday DH and I put together a super small coop to be used as a brooder / Grow out pen
It was Misty and COLD all day but we managed to get it together.
I thought it was too cold for the chicks to spend the day or night However I am hoping to get them out in it today for a while at least we will see how things go and I will add Pictures of them enjoying grass and space later.

I put an album on my page with descriptions on why we chose this one and how we think it should be used. It advertised for 6 adult Chickens

IMHO NEVER!

I have yet to see a commercial chicken coop that I feel should be used for more than a brooder / Grow up place. Temporary housing if you will.

I could also use it to separate for treatment if I had to or jail if I chose that route.

I have every Texas predator there is here thus I am building a 10X25 Fort Knox Open Air coop before I get my first bird. So I love seeing all the different breeds!! But y'all are killing me in trying to decide what to get!! Lol. And don't tell me some of each!!! My plans are ~20 birds!!

David

IF your only getting 20 birds, then I would suggest you pick out 10 breeds you like the best, and get 2 each. If possible, get them from a local feed store or perhaps local breeder, then you won't have to deal with a minimum order. Or, find someone to split an order with you and order from a hatchery.

Next year, you can either get some more breeds, or get more of the ones you like.

I was only getting 15 birds, and ended up with 21.

Sorry, I got the info on here as soon as I could. If you know how chicken math works, you might as well go get one, you will be needing it. LOL

Yep, the building never ends!!

Alas! My first batch of hatching eggs was a no go. Guess I'll perform an egg-topsy to see what happened. Hard to say. The PO scrambled and/or crushed most of them. My incubator is all digital and calibrated. Had three nights the temperature got down to 98.8. That could be it. Air circulation is plenty good with two fans. No high temperature spikes to speak of(100.3 one time). Humidity was relatively stable except for two evenings when it got a bit (5-7%) low. Oh well. We'll see what happened as best we can.
Awww, sorry you eggs didn't hatch out. :(

Looks like we have a pretty decent day ahead. I won't get much done today. I have a periodontal appt this morning, and T-ball practice this afternoon. I want to work on my ant problem sometime today. I also want to finish framing out my raised bed and get my soil in place so I can do some planting.

Good morning all! I sure hope I get more done today. It's been really hard with DH sick and now I have found this ginormous hernia just below his sternum so it has not been fun. HE NEVER has anything wrong with him. Not use to him falling apart as he says. He's so dramatic, honey get me my bullet.... Oh n make sure my pine box is ready....... I yell back..... Not before my chicken pen and coop are finished! LMBO
Here's the pic I promised. Sorry took so long. I am pretty much technologically retarded.:drool
I LOVE new tools so this is on the Lowes list now. DH said he might need a new Miter saw so I went looking and found one.... I mean hey let's do this.... But he said naw mine is still ok! Well last year I got him a new Steel chain saw for Christmas (he was shocked) so this year it will be the miter saw! Lol but today I will be getting this little baby!
I feel so blessed that I found this site and have done the research that I have done before getting my first bird. A little history here: my neighbors started with ~15 birds rooster included. She free ranged her birds completely. Over the course of about nine months she lost all but six to predation. The birds spent more time foraging on my property than hers. I returned one day to find dog tracks and blood all around and under my bldg. awning. Turns out feral dogs killed five of the six remaining birds. I forgot to add the neighbors no longer live on their property. David
I started out with 20 and I got the ones that fulfilled my purpose for getting chickens which was eggs. Brown eggs! So now I'm moving into my next purposes which will be hobby for my own "empty nest" once my son goes off to the Naval academy next year! Hoping. I plan on breeding cream legbars per breed standards! So excited about that.... Plus getting a few extras to make my egg gathering more colorful. But everything in time.
Tin snips. For some applications we use screws and 1 1/4 inch washers to hold the wire into place, other times we use nail - in fence staples.
Screws are for sure. Had used them on the tin and I had already gotten the fence staples for the chicken wire, just hate the hammering. Lol I'm a closet female Tim the tool man!! Lol
Do you have any idea how many animals I would have n 63 acres?! Noah would be jealous! ;) My poor 1/2 acre is jealous...:lau
LMBO that's cute!!

I'm right here hoping with you. Our barn stall coop in just a temp. housing as well. DH wants to take down the old barn and put up a better barn with a shop which I'm cool with. So when that happens I saw a really cool building at Lowes I think I want to turn into a coop and then more their pen over to the new coop. But that's a couple of years away! Well, time to do morning devotional, get son off to school and start my day!! Hope y'all have a blessed day!!

Thank you!

Good morning!

I am hoping that DH gets on the ball and gets going. My new enclosure for my Jersey Giants is almost done. I am so excited to get them in their own large space, with lower nesting boxes and roosts. Right now they are sharing with my Naked Necks. They all get along but they are getting a bit cramped. Here is a pic of my new enclosure. We still need a door, metal on the roof and the nesting boxes.

Looking good!

TexasLisa,
We got our chicks from Ideal in Cameron too, they were only 30 minutes away so I got to do a "customer pickup" instead of having them shipped. They folks there were really nice, our chicks have been very healthy and our 3 kids are loving this new adventure! What kind are you ordering from Ideal? I noticed in May they have Sussex available but we could not wait that long, I got Buff Orp, SL Wyandottes, and Americaunas.
