Texas

Depends on the weather, and what pen is free for them to go out in.  I only put them out in "good" weather until they are older and I always run an extension cord outside to run their warmer for them if they are still on heat.  And unless I can be right there with them, smallest babies don't go outside unless I have a secure pen free for them to use.  But in the right circumstance, I let newly hatched chicks go outside.

Today is very windy, so only the 3 week olds are outside and I set up wind breaks for them in the pen.  They've been off heat for more than a week, so I did not take a warmer out for them since it is sunny enough for them to keep warm.

Momma hens take chicks out soon after hatching, so as long as you have a heat source, wind protection, predator protection, you can take them out when you feel comfortable doing it.  No set age requirement for the chicks, just depends on your level of comfort.

Thank you so much! That was EXACTLY what I was needing! I didnt think a mama hen would not let her chicks out regardless of age so I figured they had to be hardy enough to go outside pretty soon. Although, we lost one today and im baffled. They did get the paper towel pulled up in one corner and got to the pine shavings and that one was getting pretty excited over the shavings so im thinkin it might have gotten a belly full. ...idk but we buried it and said our goodbyes and scratched our heads as to what mightve happened.

it's not uncommon to lose chicks for no apparent reason at that age...sorry about your baby

We all know how awful that feels

I am whooped tonight. It was so nice outside and there is so much to do. How can two people acquire so much stuff???
Granted alot of the junk in this old shed wasn't even ours....but wow I had to move stuff around in our little barn so I could put more stuff in it. We have it down to 3 catagories...recycle...repurpose and no purpose. The goal is to get the old area cleaned up so DH can build him a work shop for all his tools and store his motorcycle. That will free up area for another coop...that's my part of the goal!!

Next spring I'm going for more specific breeds. Still want the Aussies and barred rocks, but I sure do like those pretty blue and green eggs. Just don't know yet which to choose.

Time for a cup of hot tea and a late supper.

What a lovely evening we have going tonight folks... the moon lit shadows dancing across the yard are to die for. All little peepers tucked away for the night, all two footed critters fed and happy.

Late supper and tea? We did that too. ;) Now we're heading to bed after watching the sun set and bonfire dance.

Goodnight y'all.

Well y'all. Time to do what I do best...FABRICATE.

Gonna put in a wheat, rye, and oats patch for the critters. Instead of your standard lawn sprinkler (BORING

), I am gonna build me a mini-center pivot to irrigate this patch. Twenty feet radius, forty feet in diameter. Gonna build it with conduit, micro-sprinklers, and such. Fully sleeved piping. Variable speed. The works. If all goes well, I am gonna build a ten foot version for watering the lawn.

Just seems appropriate.
