If the pine bark base works please let me know. My goose coop was so wet I had to take it down to the dirt floor as well, and the bedding was only a week old! I am going to set it out to dry, but I don't think that bedding will be usable as anything but mulch/fertilizer. I am laying new dry bedding in the coops today. Need them all nice and clean so everyone can go back to their coops, and so my new ducklings nursery is all clean too. Lol

The damage is being cleaned, the garden can be replanted, if I have the time and energy.
Will do...I think it will work out about the same cost wise. 2cuft of bark was $2.47. Shavings are $6.50 a bale. Will have to check cu. ft but I'd guess at least 5 so close to the same. It's dark though and I like the clean look of the shavings...lol so gonna put some on top.

Yep..you should still have time to replant your corn...it comes up fast when it gets warm.

This is what it looks like half done...couldn't afford to do it all yesterday. Plus I knew it was gonna rain some more so didn't want to waste it. Trying 2 different barks...one (the lighter color in the middle) is real coarse and the other (along the wall) is alot smaller pieces. The rest is the salvagable bedding that stays for now.

It's only pine bark, no cedar or hardwood. The down side to this is it will take alot longer time to compost but will still be good to keep weeds down in the garden. I couldn't believe how deep the litter was compacted. It was at least 3-4 inches and soaked...would have things sprouting in there had we left it...but too nasty...Yuck!

Where did you get the bark from? What was it called, is it just the pine mulch you can get at Home Depot and Walmart?

Right...got this at Lowe's probabaly could have gotten it at Walmart...but have plastic for Lowes...lol
There is a mulch plant close to us so if it works we might look into getting a pick up load.
Will see how it works first.
I don't know if anyone else has tried this..I can't think of anything harmful about it...it just doesn't look as pretty.

Anybody either is or knows someone who is renting houses around the Odessa/Midland area outside city limits in county? I'm having to move out there and haven't had any luck finding a place. I have chickens and don't want to part with them. Thanks a lot.

They had other ...hardwood (which is oak and it has tannin in it which is not good) and cedar, plus junk with dye in it for looks but was also more expensive. Figure pine bark is not much different than shavings...just a different part of the tree.

I will look into undyed pine bark. I think it would work well on a dirt floor coop. Thanks for the suggestion.
