I got 8 now, want 4 more, only because that is all I have room for in the coops, but wouldn't mind a few more than that. Never accused of having much common sense, please don't tell my wife!! LOL

Wife is OK with 4 more, but beyond that, we have the room, but not the funds for another coop!!!

I do appreciate any advice. I originally though to get 3 or 4 pullets but after talking to someone who has lots (50) chickens. She was saying more is better than less. I know 100% that we cannot do more than 6.
Yay for Round Rock!

I suggest getting them all at the same time so you don't have to worry about integrating littles with bigs. It can get ugly

3 to 6 pullets is a good start. Just be sure to have a secure coop and run for them. If you have that you wil be a happy and productive chicken farmer, for lack of a better word. LOL Like I said, I will be happy to help you with any coop advice!!

I really appreciate the offer and help! I will be hitting you up for some design help soon.

I swear to all things holy.... A coon is going to die tonight. Ballsy coon stole a hen last night some time between 8&9, when I go out to close doors. Stole her right off her egg pile!!!!!!!! Left feathers every where. Blood trail up two trees. She was my favorite broody :( I hunted for him last night. Found what was left of her body this morning. And found the tree he had her in because of that. Set the trap and sleeping with an ear open. RIP Fruit Loop

I will give you some advice. You can use it or not. Here it is. Start with about 6 young pullets, about a month to 2 months before being ready to lay. A lot of beginners try bto start with chicks. They regret it later, because of the extra work it involves. Doing it this way will let you know if you are wanting to to do more. It will see if you are willing to go the extra mile to raise chicks. I agree, you need a place to keep them before you get them, from personal experience. With the small space you have, this will probably be all you will be able to have, comfortably. Please don't take this the wrong way, the more birds the better. This will give you and your husband an idea what you are getting into. Personally, my sister-in-law called us one day, and told us to come pick up our birds. This how I got started, now, I am hooked!! I love my birds and want more!! I have 8 birds and get an average of 7 eggs a day. I will never buy a store-bought egg again!! The biggest thing is, they need a secure place to be kept.

I am 1 of those that started with chicks, but my parents had chickens, ducks, and geese when iwas young so I sort of knew what I was getting into. And not only did I jump in with a large batch of chicks, I then kept adding more and more chicks, ducklings, and goslings too! It's very addictive, lol. The chicks required a lot of care and training, but in the end I think I made the right choice for me. My chickens have been raised and handled by me daily, the new rooster I brought in hasn't and the difference in temperament is huge. My ladies will jump in my lap for snuggles and to try and get some extra treats, those pigs, lol. The rooster, while not aggressive, does not let anyone near him. At the present time I have 25 chickens in a coop that can hold a little over 50. (How's that for chicken math expansion space?) I also have 8 geese and 7 ducks in a different coop. Definately get the coop set up Before you get pullets, i did it the other way around and that was a pain!

I think I quoted the wrong person, lol.
