Texas

A predator can easily rip through chicken wire even on top - raccoon climb, possums climb, skunks can do a little climbing, even some dogs climb.

We use welded wire fencing for all runs, including tops, and then layer either chicken wire or hardware cloth on top of that along the bottoms of the walls of the runs to keep chicken body parts inside the run.
Thanks for the input. I was thinking along those same lines, but just wanted to make sure by putting the heavier wire on top was not going to be overkill/wasted money.

I like him! Pretty coloring!! :)

Thank you, everyone. Our hearts are lighter knowing Red's suffering has ended.

We had Red's funeral this evening & our daughter is taking it remarkably well.

I'm not sure if The Ladies & The Girls have really noticed Red's absence...even though she used to be "Head Honcho". I guess our 9 chickens will have to reconfigure their pecking order now.

R.I.P. Red. We didn't have you long, but you'll be in our hearts forever. I am sorry we couldn't make you well, but I am glad you are no longer suffering. We miss you already. :hit April 2014 (when Red came into our lives) :) August 2014 (when Red left us) :(
I'm very sorry about Red

Welcome, Round Rock here.

Hi guys! My name's Amanda, I'm in Cedar Creek, just outside Bastrop/Austin area. Love it here, it's country enough but still within an hour to just about everything I need. I live on a road called Possum Hollow and boy if it ain't true to it's name! I'm constantly trapping possum and coons...the raccoons are the worst. The issue I'm having is the soil here is so sandy and soft that, with a few days of determination, the raccoons can dig in. We've buried chicken wire under 6"x6" stone and every few weeks we still find we're missing a hen. SO...we planted Cannas really thick around 2 sides of the coop which has served as snacks and shade for the flock, and we buried giant cedar logs on the other 2 sides and that's helped quite a bit. That said, it's still a non-stop fight. I'd love a PM from folks in the area with similar issues!
