What a beautiful day here in CenTex! Happy Thanksgiving to all my BYC peeps. As I was cracking the freshest of eggs into my pumpkin pie mix, I couldn't help but go give my fuzzy butts some extra treats! Spoil your girls today too... and wear your stretchy pants!!

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Texans!!!

It was a lovely day here. Finished up early and even had time to paint some 2x4's for my run.

@Brookshire11 ~ Such cuties! How many do you have? Looks like you have a good momma there! :)

Helloooooo Texas!

I was wondering, one chicken person to another, does anyone here have an opinion about the best place to live around Houston?

My ex is moving to Texas shortly and for my daughters sake, I am considering moving there as well.  His destination seems to be the Houston area.

You all seem to be a nice group of people here and maybe you would share your thoughts and opinions on if the heat is too hot for some breeds of chickens in Texas, or if they all seem to do okay?

Also, if you are willing to share, what would be a nice place to move outside of Houston, but still commutable, and away from the Coast not towards it.  I think he is focusing on Katy, Magnolia, and Conroe areas.      Any opinions, or pros and cons?

I won't be bringing the chickens I have right now, but once I get settled I will get some more hatching eggs and start all over.  Hatching can be addictive all on its own.

Anyway, Hello from Northern California.  Sorry to butt in on your group, but I might be joining it soon! :frow

It is usually hot and humid in Houston, but you don't usually have to worry about tomato plants freezing in winter :) You can grow all kinds of citrus trees too! (I can get you seeds.)

Black Astrolorps handle heat well (originally from Australia). My Gold sex links (RIR x RIW) tend to pant a lot and stick to the shade in summer.

If you move to Magnolia, find a place AWAY from the Texas Renaissance Festival. Traffic is crazy during the season (Oct-Nov) and the roads are not designed to handle it. (I go every year, but I'm surethe lines are frustrating for the locals).

My dream bater batch for the New Year's Day Hatch-a-long would include black Astrolorps, Isbars, Cockoo Maren, Jubilee Orpingtons, and buff leghorns. Does anyone in the San Antonio area have hatching eggs to share/sell?

Thank you! 5 made it. There was a 6th egg peeping when I left to go out of town, but she didn't make it.
She was way behind the others. Did an eggtopsy and I think she just wasn't quite strong enough. Had a little yolf left to absorb and the shell was probably a little too thick for her.
So 5 sweet Russian babies to rear up, then in Spring I'll pick my breeding trio and rehome the rest. I'm a few birds over my "limit" lol

Just adding on :)
I'm in Dallas now but have lived in Conroe, The Woodlands, Magnolia, and Tomball.
I'd stick to Magnolia or Conroe if you want to keep your chickies.
I don't think Katy "allows" them.
Tomball is a little more rural too but I hate that town lol

With the heat up here..it gets a tad hotter but it's not as humid. I've had Buff Orps, Easter Eggers, a Silkie, a Barred Rock, then younger: Russian Orloffs, Australorps and Salmon Faverolles. Haven't lost any to heat. They do pant though. As long as they have plenty of water and shade they usually do fine.
Welsummers do well I've heard.
And the plus is that Winter is a lot milder there!

Off topic..I may try and sneak a turkey in..hmmm
