Texas

Hello Everyone:

I am located in East Texas near Lufkin. Was wondering if there were any breeders of Salmon Faverolles in Texas.....any that might on this thread ? I am interested in both the Large Fowl and the Bantams in the Salmon.....preferably chicks, juveniles or adults rather than hatching eggs. I do show poultry so they wouild need to be close to their ABA Standard. PM me if you have anything or know of someone who might. Thanks so much.

About 60 miles south of you, but sorry no Salmons. I have 6 EE's, and 11 Black Copper Maran chicks and 11 Americauana chicks coming to me in May 4 as a straight run. I plan on breeding those once they are mature.

Thanks!

We almost didn't get it, I put Dawn and Phantom through CGC together, as I have crates at the training center now. I worked the down stay super hard because that is very difficult for Siberians to do! They did it beautifully, I thought the worst was over and then they blew the recall! They have never had a bad recall, they think coming to me is the greatest because they get chicken jerky and scratches! But Dawn rocketed towards me and nearly knocked me flying with a sucker punch to my gut, and Phantom just went past me to go smell the fences! Luckily, that was the only test they blew and our evaluator was able to retest us that same night. He gave us 10 minutes to recover our composure and they did a good recall on our second try.

Oops! I can imagine that was quite a scene. I'm glad they gave you another chance that night. Want to come train my coonhound and basset on recall? ;)

Lubbock Texas whoop whoop!
Love the pic! I was born in Lubbock, many, many moons ago. :)

Hi all! Hope you had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

My dogs are all in training, Dawn and Phantom got their Canine Good Citizen, woohoo!

Congrats on the CGC!! I did obedience many years ago with our Rough Collie. It was so fun!

Heading to the auction today in Athens to see what they have.

How'd the auction go? Find anything you couldn't leave without?

It is such a joyous time when the hens begin laying again.
Pic of my beautiful girls.
They are pretty! Do you plan on getting any more?

Howdy!!! Joined BYC in December and have loved every minute of it. I live in Garwood - 20 minutes north of El Campo.
Welcome!

I just have a mixed flock of hatchery hens. I love 'em though! What shows do you go to? I would love to go to some and just see what is all out there.

It has rained here since before dawn. So far we've gotten 1 1/2" of rain. Water is just everywhere! Hope everyone is doing ok. I guess it could be worse. It could be snow or even ice!

It's in the CGC rules that if a dog blows only 1 test they can try again that night, if they blow 2 or more they have to come back another day to retest.

Recall isn't that hard. Never be angry when you call your dog and he/she comes, it can save their life so always be happy they came to you. And use high value treats, my dogs love the chicken jerky from Costco, but left over meats in the fridge work too. Have someone hold you dog (if they don't know stay), walk away a bit and call their name, when they come, treat and praise the dog. Gradually add distance. It won't take the dog long to learn that coming when you call their names means good things are going to happen. A solid recall has saved me from hours of searching the neighborhood when my dogs escaped the yard, and I live right next to a major highway so it's probably saved my dogs lives as well!

That's good to know about the CGC. My dogs usually have good recall till the smell something. But I know better and they aren't allowed off leash unless we are at the dog park or fenced area. If they see a rabbit then they won't hear a thing I say. If there are no distractions then recall is fine. I guess that proves I need to work on it more? My beagle mix does fantastic, my coonhound/bloodhound does well but then Again she gets separation anxiety and doesn't leave my side except when she gets on a scent and my basset... I know I could do better. You inspire me to work with them more.

What you describe about them not minding when they smell something is why we start with high value treats. Something smelly and yummy! Like hamburger, or real chicken! You condition the dogs to come to you using that high value foods and then eventually they are so used to obeying that they will come even if you don't have yummy smelly food on you. Some dogs are harder to train than others, but with enough patience you should be able to get a good recall on most dogs.

My dogs USUALLY come when they're called. Sometimes, though, they run the other direction.

Don't feel bad, you should have seen me Before I started training! I couldn't even walk my dogs on leash, vet visits were hell because my dogs thought I was a sled to pull! Just 2 Siberians and I was hanging on for dear life being dragged around! I do still have to use a pinch collar for visits to the vets or when I take 3 or more dogs out by myself, but I can easily walk 2 dogs on a normal collar. They still pull, but they don't dig in like they used to, being that they are sled dogs, I accept that they will not heel properly. It's in their DNA to pull and I can't train that out of them completely, the fact that 2 of my Siberians were well mannered enough to get their CGC is enough for me, and proves how far we have come!

Training takes time, patience, and perseverance! 10 minutes 2-3 times a day to learn new behaviors and then reminder sessions to keep it fresh in the dogs mind. But the rewards are awesome! I can take all 6 dogs to the vets now with only my 12 year old son as a helper! Huge improvement when before I had to have my hubby (who is 6'3" and very strong), and my 12 and 13 year old sons to help! I often take 3-4 dogs to training class by myself!

As far as egg production now: I have a total of 24 hens, but out of the 24, I know of only 9 that are laying for sure. I'm getting an average of 4-6 eggs a day from those 9, which is nice, but not so much if you consider them all. Since I'm not selling any right now, & don't really use a lot myself, that's plenty. Most of the ones not laying, I think, are just coming of age & maybe winter is affecting that (?), but I do have a Cream Legbar trio & a Coronation Sussex trio that haven't laid in months, as in late summer/early fall. Hoping they start up again come spring, if not before.
