Texas

Hello, I'm new to the board and I'm also new to back yard chicken keeping. I live in West Texas in Lubbock.

Welcome!

None of our chickens drowned but all of my progress was lost as I had to close everyone up because of the wind. It seems like I will never get these two groups together! That white one is always after them and if she gets near them the others go after the orange ones too. Grrr.

May just have to pull the new ones in again, wait a week and start from scratch after they have all forgotten each other again.

My garden is drowned, I hope some plants survive. WAY overwatered. Lol. One of my husbands dragon peppers lost all but two leaves, we are hoping it lives.

Did anyone else get gigantic hail? It took out so much of our greenery!

We haven't gotten any hail but a heck of a lot of rain and much cooler night time temperatures than is normal for this time of year. My garden is doing fine because we do no till/sheet mulching with arbor wood chips, which is such a relief considering everyone else's gardens I know are in standing water so they're losing crops. My tomatoes and peppers are not happy with the cooler temps though.

I have to start all over :/
Dogs got a taste of blood Friday morning and took out the rest Monday morning

I'm going to wait until I get their place ft.knoxed before we get anymore

Where would be the best place, either local or through a hatcher,to get chicks and ducks

We live in stephenville, tx

My chicks were still inside their brooder, in the house, and my plants are I'm cow pots until I get my garden area situated...so I pulled them inside too

Dublin got HUGE melon size hail, where are you located @StelleKitten

Welcome to BYC!
If I was looking for ya Kate I would be looking for a redhead!! Of course also wearing a purple shirt. More rain coming Kate but rain beats the hell out of drought. After 2011 I said I would never complain about the rain.

I am so sorry for your loss :(
It all depends on what you are looking for. Some breeds are hard to find local, while others are not. Hatcheries can be more expensive due to the fact that you must buy a minimum number of chicks, where as if you buy local a lot of places you can pick up however many you like, on the other hand, lots of local places you cannot get sexed chicks. Most hatcheries and feed stores will offer sexed chicks.

Sorry, had to reboot. Computer froze up. I hate windows8!!!

Doing well on this end. Busier than a cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

I am actually building a coop with run for rooster, and if he is still reading, it is almost finished.

David, are you going to be able to make it to Conroe Trading Days?? Would love to meet you. If not, I will be coming your way (Henderson, TX) in a few weeks. My sister-in-law got us three or four more birds, that we have to pick up.

It is always good to wake up on the north side of the dirt.
I hate it when the computer does that. One minute typing, the next. I also hate Winvirus 8. Cool, and yes, I am still reading. It will be nice to get the two oprington chicks and the two PBR's out the brooder box, so I can move in the new crop due in from a hobby farm ran by another BYC'er out of Georgia. I worked hard Sunday on the outside coop with a 16 foot run, that is taller than I am. I am waiting for the weather to figure itself out so I can start putting up hardware cloth and chicken wire. I have the door built, just got to hardware cloth that, and then put in the hinges and latches.

I will never brood chicks again. Power went out and temperatures dropped. I am a worried Momma hen. Do not need the stress. Yesterday was a beautiful day and I thought it might be a good time to put the chicks out in a fenced area until a saw the hawk which I had forgotten about. It never bothers my full grown hens, but I am sure it would have gone after the chicks. Now with the colder weather I am thinking it will be weeks before I move the chicks outside to their coop/brooder.
I miss watching my broody hens raise chicks. That's the way to do it.

Just a few days out from trade days. I'm going, without a doubt. I'll be wearing a purple shirt that says ask me about my chickens, if I get a chance to finish it.

Managed to warm up the half drowned chicks from this morning's storm. When will thus crazy weather end?

I wish I could make it--sounds like fun. Post all about what you see there.

I agree about this crazy weather. And where did this cold front come from? Brrrr...
