Texas

Thanks for all the suggestions with the snake repellents. My main concern is my brooders right now. I don't think anything other than a small one can squeeze into my hens' coop, and they may take care of it if it does. Although their coop is close to the grow-out coop now, so I think the snakes will steer clear of it anyways. Never saw a snake in the years the hens were at my Grandma's and we had at least one guinea in with them, it managed to escape and disappear a few weeks before we brought them here. Even the rabbits are now avoiding the nearby trees since they've been out there, which is good since we planted pumpkin vines around the bases of the trees. Plan to stick with the bird netting around the brooders, along with DE so I can see any "tracks". Hopefully it will continue to work.

I am in Deep East Texas in Angelina County. Starting a backyard flock and would like to know what breed people are raising in my climate. Any information would be much appreciated.

Looks like we're in for another flooding! At least we've dried out from the last one, but I am so not looking forward to all that mud again. AND, I have to drive to Cameron on Wednesday to pick up some new chicks. That's not going to be a picnic in the rain, for sure.

I have a mixed laying flock of Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks & Easter Eggers. I have some 8 week old English Orps that are doing great. They have more feathers than my grown hens, lol. Just about any breed will be ok here, as long as you take the heat/humidity into consideration. Have plenty of ventilation, shade, water and cool treats to keep them from over heating.
