Texas

Hey Ive got a question for all my fellow Texans ;)  Ok... how do you best deal with the heat for chickens?  I'm worried about the heat already!  I'm from a cold climate so Umm... I think I'm gonna die ;)

I just make sure they have tons of water and shade. I also put out a big plastic bottom of a potted plant that is big enough for several chickens to stand in and I fill it with cool water. It took mine a little while to get used to having water that's for more than drinking but after a while they would be vying for a place in it

Absolutely. Tons of water and shade. Plus shade. Also make sure they have shade. And super ventilation in the coop, even a fan if you want to use up the electricity. A coop with the south wall completely open is good too. By open I mean wire only. Even better, have both south and west walls open with a big window to the east. My east window has a cover I put on it during the winter but that's where the roost is and during the summer with it open they get a nice breeze.

I have a big metal tray that my mother had made for another purpose that is 3" high and 6' x 3'. I put that in their shaded run and changed the water out every few days. They loved standing in it. The run is open and they have access to the whole yard but they hung out in that water a lot this past summer.

I was thinking of giving them a pool to walk in and setting it up with a waterfall... I know my wild birds LOVE running water especially when its hot... but do chickens? I'm a newbie... I dont know.
