Texas

Here’s the thing; IF I’m getting young hens (not baby chicks) I prefer getting them from families that have a few extra hens running around their yard. Hence my question. I don’t want to mail order a full grown bird or buy from a commercial hatchery. That’s just me, not saying it’s the only way. I’d like to replace a few I’ve lost during the winter. I do have a few local people from Craigslist I’m dealing with BUT I wanted to see if anyone from BYC is close and is willing to sell.
You don't worry that you might choose the wrong person on CL and bring home a disease?

I wouldn't worry, as we aren't a certified hatchery where I live.

I kinda like your idea. I have never once gotten a good roo "mail ordering"(granted I am only 2 seasons invested). I know flea markets are not popular in your region of Texas but that is another option. My neighbor brings home hens all the time but I have no clue where he sources them as my second language isn't spanish.

I have three farmers I got to know through CL and I’m getting hens from them almost exclusively. A few requirements for CL chickens; nothing cheap, I don’t even look at chickens under $15 or $20. If they are posting frequently, I’m not interested (I worry they are doing it for profit). I google map their location and if they are keeping chickens in pens vs freee range, I don’t buy from them (just my preference). If I don’t like the conditions they are keeping their birds in I refuse to buy. I always pay their asking price and try to stay in contact if I like their birds so I can call them again. There are several more... I’m pretty picky. And of course I quarantine. Sometimes not as long as I should but...I try my best. I’ve Never had a problem *knock on wood*

Great news to my ears.
I really wish everyone would investigate better/more.
I have only browsed my local CL a few times, just for kicks.
I find the people who posted when i browser to be a joke for more reasons then just claiming it was a certain breed when it clearly wasn't.
These type of people...:he:he:he are probably the ones who sell sick birds.
