Texas

Seems I have an egg laying problem:

1-Chicken stopped laying in their boxes and dogs are eating them.
2-I have one in molt.
3-We have only had 2 days this month without an extreme heat advisory, D3 drought, and forage quality is poorer for my free ranger flock.
I vote 3.
I've had snakes. Tons of snakes. I've even lost some eggs from under broodies this year. I've got my minnow traps set.

Fortunately I have a cat that would be bringing me snakes if we had any around. He brings me bunnies and possums and rats. This weeks catch was slim though I only got one half grown size possum. The next full grown possum I get I am going to have to post a photo before the chicken eat it. The cat is only 14 pounds but he punches out of his weight class!

Also, the layer boxes are all on the porch for the free rangers. Been alert for egg song/lost chicken song lately thinking there could be a mystery nest somewhere but that has been a bust.

I'd love to have a cat. Unfortunately, I have 2 boxers that aren't cat friendly. My younger girls are laying eggs all over the yard and in the woods too, since the snake sightings. It's an egg hunt every day.
If the older girls are laying (they aren't freeranged) something is definately taking eggs.

Then it has got to be the bunnies! In north Texas the cat loved bringing home snakes from the creek out back. Never a copperhead though.

Cool find today, got loads of wooden fruit packing boxes from my local fruit stand. I plan to set them up lengthwise with a divider in the middle so they fit two bantam nests each inside the coop for my layers. Best of all they are FREEEEEEE! @RUNuts A few are falling apart but I'll salvage that LUMBER for minor modifications.
