Texas

I saw your pics of numerous pheasant varieties and they are really beautiful. Put a lot of my molting hens to shame. Didn’t know there were so many types and domesticated too. Will they set their own eggs? Also the chicks , I think were pheasant have very similar markings to my EE chicks.
Sadly it's unfortunate that most pheasant hens will not set, it has been bred out of them by artificial incubation of their eggs. Occasionally, I have a hen or two that do set but once they hatch, they don't know how to care for them either, or they will set half way through then leave the nest. 😩

I first started having trouble with my right leg at 13, shattered the ankle, riding bulls. :D Later on at 30 got 5 bullet holes put in it during George H. Bushes 100 hour "fun" run in Kuwait! :D , then when 50, I broke my tibia and fibia in an motorcycle accident, :D and at 58 broke my hip twice!
Each time had to learn how to walk again. Each time the doc told me I probably wouldn't walk again, and if I did I'd have a severe limp or be in a wheel chair for the rest of my life. I have proven them wrong in all cases, except this last time...I'm still limping, a little! :D

You two have have it so right about recovering strength & stamina is so much slower after surgery! I'm still with a bit of a limp from knee surgery that couldn't be repaired - only "cleaned up."

Ugh, I know your struggle. On top of the mangled right leg, my knees want buckle on me....some days it just doesn't pay to crawl out o' bed! :D

Good morning guys! So yesterday I did a lot of porch setting watching the birds as we had two hawk attacks that were successful. The five week old silkies are down to two from the original five now and they have three mothers tending to them. I'm thinking if anything makes it out alive in that batch its name will be lucky. Believe it or not bleeding heart isn't too terribly upset about this as she certainly doesn't mind feeding wildlife versus creating dog toys. And the one week olds are down to 6 but that's because I have a stupid dog who is no longer allowed out until they stop peeping during the day. We are both still committed to free-ranging them though can't wait for North Texas spring to arrive and see all of these raptors move on.

Two red tailed hawks were in/over my backyard yesterday. Fortunately, I was nearby and heard my rooster alerting the hens.
That's the first time that I've seen two hunting together. One was much smaller so I'm guessing it was a juvenile.
They were gorgeous! I hope that they had a nice meal somewhere else...maybe a raccoon or a skunk. I hope they won't be back today, but I expect they will.

sorry for the baby losses!

I’ve only lost tiny chickens this year, about 4, and one adult to birds of prey.
Anyone had luck coexisting with a red shoulder hawk?

ive lost to red tail and coopers and a bald eagle. This RSH has been around forever. Lately I see it just hanging by us. Whenever it gets too close I often lock everyone up. This week however I haven’t because all my littles are penned and I see it hunting around the pond. I swear sometimes it’s been sitting on the fence ten feet from 10-12 hens. Starting to think it has no interest in the chickens? :fl

If I’m reading this right you have one male and two female Pekins and are wanting to add three more females? Why not more Pekins? I can’t help it,bInlove them!

I don’t know specifics but go to a hatchery web page and see what they list as heavy breeds. That will give you something to look for.

Oh sorry, I forgot to add that I want a different breed rather than pekin's. Yes I've been looking on hatcheries, but they if they sell adults, they're not the right breed, AKA light breeds . However whenever I do find the right breed their babies! Argh! I've always still looked on Craigslist and they don't have any I'm looking for :(
