I would most likely keep him for breeding. Especially if he's a metzer drake, they have some of the better drakes. Cackle has a few decent welshies too, but I've seen a few uglies😂
My current drake is related to all my hens, and I would rather use an unrelated drake for breeding. And after I hatch some girls I'll need a new drake anyways, and I don't mind trading, that way you'd still have the amount of hens you originally wanted.
If he's butt ugly you may just want to re-home him to someone who wants a pet. I'm one of those people who eats the uglies😂
I've kept drake flocks in the past, they're fun, and quiet, but I just don't have the time for another one atm. Only my breeders are staying.
I was planning on ordering from Metzer!

I hope so!
What's your duck set up? I'm trying to decide how I want mine to be.
I have them in tractors now. I hate them being in tractors.
I have always preferred pens. Right now I only have one, and the fencing doesn't keep them in. I plan on having three pens in the future, they will rotate together for the most part, but in breeding season I will separate them by breed for pure ducklings.

Because of the rain yesterday I wasn't able to set it up, but I just got some new fencing for their pen. When they're in it I'll post some pics, right now they're muddy because they are on dry grass and it just rained.

They have their own barn within the pen. I love the ducky barn.

Nice!
How much space should I need for the ducks?

I'll measure my pen when I go feed. It's not too big, but they've never been able to kill the grass in it, and I'll also measure the footprint of the barn, it fits them all nicely and they like to spend a lot of the day in there when it's cold or hot, but it's never been icky in the pen or the barn.

I find that ducks are significantly cleaner than chickens, they forage more, but they are also more gentle on the ground.

Ok!
I was thinking a 4x4 coop and something like a 70sq ft run. For their pool I was thinking of using a 50 gallon rubbermaid stock tank.
